I think both Cyp_PGA and akhild made very important points. (quoted and highlighted in orange)
At ranges, I like to steal glances at coaches giving single lessons. The most common thing heard was both coach and student debating what the student was doing in the swing.
The student thinks he was executing his swing one way while the coach sees a totally different thing. That's when trust breaks down and the session goes downhill. Eventually, the student parts with his money grudgingly and the coach mutters under his breath never to teach this chap again!
A video solves this problem immediately!
My thoughts are, while we may have our unique idiosyncracies, the most fundamental basics of a golf swing remains the same for everyone --- hitting down on the ball, flat left wrist at impact, clubhead lag and swing plane. How we achieve all these becomes our unique personal journeys. And the greatest obstacle in this quest is self-awareness. We think we are swinging a certain way but in fact we are doing something else.
So far, my non-golfing wife has been my best coach! All she does is, she patiently asks what I am trying to do and where I am trying to hit the ball BEFORE she videos that one single shot for me. So, at the range, it becomes one spoken objective, one hit, one video, one result. (.....and she charges me only half-price per session!)

I can't agree more. It kinda sums up for golfers of any level.

Greg is a nice guy. He's been my coach for the last...hmm...
12 years!!!!!!!!!
since he came from Aussie-land and coached at Toa Payoh in the 1990s.
The good thing about Greg is that he is a left-hander and it's basically a mirror image for us.
If you are at Green Fairways, go to the end of the lower bays and you will not miss a "botak" ang-moh there

Hi, Alvin
I did not have a coach for first 2 years of my golfing experience. Only last year I engaged a personal coach and here is my experience... 1. I was surprised that he did not tweak my swing... 2. I was surprised that he did not tweak my putting strokes... Because I was expecting above when I decided to engage a coach
Instead, 1. I learned how to do pre-shot routine. 2. I learned how to do bunker shot because he saw me doing badly with it when we play together. 3. I learned a lot of short games drills and technique: chipping, pitching, putting.
I feel that it is important for us to find a coach whom we can really trust. I can imagine if I didn't trust my coach, I would not want to do what he wanted me to do because it was against my expectation. At the end of the day, both hands need to clap..
I agree with you. My swing was not changed by him.. but he thought me what to practice and how to practice, and also bring me to course and showed me how to apply..
come to think of it.. long time never go course with him to complete my lessons..he is Mr T****

For an intermediate player, I will still recommend going for a 1 on 1 package if you find a good pro.
The lessons don't have to be weekly but timely in between so progress can be tracked.
I'm also all for video analysis.
Like someone mentioned, it ends all debate when you see yourself swing. Most of the time, it will be totally different from what you thought you were doing.
If your coach didn't use video and told you you were doing something, you will definitely have that doubt in mind that you are definitely doing 'something right' instead of what he says. Thats just natural because you have been playing the game for a while and have hit good shots before vs a total beginner.
Sorry to say but I definitely think foreign coaches are better than locals when it comes to teaching. Their route to being a teaching professional is just more systematic, structured and organised. What they go thru is not what a local caddy who qual-ed thru SPGA testing shooting under 80 for the test rounds will know and learn in their lifetime.
I'm not saying there aren't any good local coaches but your chances of finding a good local one are tougher than finding a good foreign one.
If a coach can explain your swing to you simply like this where you can understand what you were doing wrong, then I think he is plenty good enough. (Sorry for the repost of this vid)
If you can go back with that 'light bulb effect over your head' feeling after the lesson, then you know that he and you are well on the way accomplishing the common goal which is to help you get better by understanding your own swing.
Shortgame training is alot tougher. For an intermediate player, un-learning what you thought were your fundamentals in chipping, pitching and bunker play might be alot tougher than learning it first hand. Many will be reluctant to change as some minor success has been seen on the golf course. If you are the type who is always open to ideas, then mebbe picking up the correct techniques will be faster than expected.
Lastly, most players suffer more on the range then learn from their kakis.
Not saying picking up tidbits and 'tips' from friends is not right but honestly, if they struggle to break 90 or 80 themselves, how much of their info do you think is correct anyway?
