It does but only up to a certain amount but still your fundamental is more important then it.
Not to insult anybody here, many people tell me." I can hit 3i this distance blah blah blah...but i often seen them hitting much shorter then their 5i and most duff or top" I guess it's a ego thing.....

That's the beauty of this game, Bro enwee
We have some PGA professionals who makes a living on tour where their longest club is a 5i
Then we have some weekend hackers who claim they can play 3i
I guess whatever rocks their world then.

i feel depending on the height of individual, a 3iron for a shorter guy may feel like a 5 iron on a taller guy

I guess as any fitter would advise, getting a shaft that fits is an important element.
In addition, from personal observation, learning a sound swing makes a big difference, especially in the beginning, when its easy to pick up bad habits.
The long irons will quickly determine if there are bad habits.
But be careful to warm up thoroughly first.
Enjoy the experience. Have fun with it.

This female teaching Pro offered a very good tip here ... I noticed many tour pro nowadays also hit down and take divot for 3i, 4i and even FW instead of executing a clean sweep ... TW is one good example.

I believe at this stage you shouldn't ponder too much if the shaft matter or not ... You should check if your swing fundamental is correct first ... My above post re the female teaching pro advised one to do a proper weight shift and hit down on the ball on impact is an excellent swing tip ... Even though am not a single handicapper, I am aware that one could reap immense dividends if he/she could do that ...

Actually I thought all clubs must have this hit down feel to let it go up not only long irons

Absolutely except maybe for driver ... But for social golfers, it is better to have positive AOA for driver though am aware many tour pros have about -0.5 deg of AOA.
When junyaoching mentioned in his first post that he hits the top edge of the driver head often, I suspect he fails to do a proper weight shift ... And ball position maybe another root cause ... We don't know until he posts a video clip of his swing here ...

Cant hit a 3i? Get a hybrid and save yourself the trouble screwing your swing up trying to hit a 3i.

My longest iron in the bag is 5. Anything higher are hybrids. I have determine that I dun have the talent or time to make my long irons work for me. So have long decided to move to hybrid.
Golf is a game to enjoy. Not to stress over. And found out the hard way last game never to put any club that u have no confidence into play. It will kill ur day and play.

+1.
Play within your limits. The game is already hard enough. No need to make it even harder.

On that subject of long irons vs hybrids, anybody has tried the Mizuno MP H4 long irons replacement? Seems easier to hit with hollow construction technology.

When you can finally hit your 3i properly, you will have to consider if you even have the swing speed to hit it significantly further than lets say your 4i or 5i. Not to mention launching it high enough to begin with.

I have to agree with u on this ... Able to hit the sweet spot does not mean one can produce a reasonable distance one should be getting out of the 3i ... In other words, If one does not have the swing speed to handle the low loft, one would not be able to optimise it effectively well ... That is why I gave up using 3i ... I usually use my 4i to tee off only for par 3 hole and seldom hit my 4i off the deck ...

From your description of your problem, sounds like your friend is right.
The long irons are a good way to diagnose one's swing. Any slightest weakness will show up.
After you work on getting the weight shift correct, your other clubs will improve automatically as a result.
Next, like the posts above stated, the long iron will tell you whether you are hitting with enough oomph to launch it sufficiently. Working on this will improve your swing fundamentally. Not easy to be sure. But if you are willing to invest the time and effort, your swing and your enjoyment of the game will benefit greatly.
Have fun.

Like what bro Enwee said, you can explore first. Personally, I have taken the hybrid route many years ago. In fact, I carry 2 hybrids, 3 & 5. They're just so much easier to hit and get the ball airborne. My 3i & 4i are now just ornaments (gathering dust) in my spare golf bag at home.
