Phil misses the green from wherever he was in the gallery. He is already +4.

With another bogey, Na has dropped completely off the first page of the leaderboard.

It has become a game of seeing who makes the least mistakes. Feels like the top name of the leaderboard will probably change many times over the 4 days. Like watching people climb up a grease pole.

Tiger's tee shot is looking very steady and controlled. Bubba meanwhile is hitting it all over, and is +6. Phil is holding steady at +4. Tiger holding at even, 1 birdie, 1 bogey, the rest pars.

Exactly.

Bear in mind, Andy started at hole 1, so he went through the formidably difficult hole 1-6 first. That's where he dropped most of the shots.

Tiger's group started at hole 9, so they are only going through 1-6 now. So, there may be more dropped shots to come before they get through.

Tiger is playing a carefully managed game, choosing his shots, placing his approach. The focus is minimizing mistake, waiting patiently for scoring chances.

Bubba, and to a lesser extent Phil, are more bombing it, taking risks. And when they make mistakes, the tough course will punish severely.

If this continues, Tiger will climb steadily.

And..... Tiger's patience pays off with another birdie at hole 5, after throttling back his tee shot to make sure he lands on the fairway. Tiger at -2 now and climbs to T2.

Watching how he planned his shots to hunt for GIR and birdie opportunity is like a master class in course management, esp at this tough US Open course. And paired up with Phil and Bubba shows a clear contrast with a more risk taking style and how mistakes can be made leading to bogeys.

The Rory Lee Luke group has not teed off yet.

Would be interesting to see how they fare in hole 1-6. It will tell a lot about how well they will fare in this tournament.
