Nope, can't do it with my blades. With my profound apologies.

But MP52, 9 iron, doable.

I'm jus allergic to bullshit. That's all.

Can't wait to see how u do it...esp with that 9i of urs.

OK la.

To cure your allergic reaction, and without the chance to play a game with you anytime soon, another avenue is this.

Roger Loo was my coach at that time. He is a certified teaching pro. He has a regular column in a Malaysian golf magazine. Those familiar with the Malaysian golf scene would know him.

At that time, he was teaching at the Kiara range. When I was hitting that distance, I went over and showed him. So.... feel free to verify for those who seem to care so much that....

IT MUST BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR A 'BEGINNER' TO HIT 150 WITH A 9 IRON!

Chill bros... chill. Just wanted to share what is possible.

Lee it's not the 150m 9 iron that they're questioning, it's the 200m 9 iron. we didnt misread right? U did say u borrowed ur friends 9 iron and hit it 200m?

Anyhow, I figured your distance will be quite similar to Ernie Els. (Standing 1.91m) I saw him at the arnold palmer invitational, par 3, 202 yards (~180m) low head wind. He used a 6 iron and was short of the pin.

In Arnold Palmer invitational, Tiger used a 6i for a Par 3 14th hole; 224 yards (if my memory serves me well) ... But he was short by a lot and the ball found the bunker guarding the green ... Here is the video ... look at 0.54 sec of the clip.

seems like he hit it a little fat. if he had
taken a 6iron out, it means he has done it before. afterall, it's not
the first time he's playing that hole, for sure.

Tiger's length for each club must be the most well documented for any golfer. It's easy to check.

But what's much much much more amazing, is his CONTROL of the shot, the trajectory, the shape. the spin, and the reaction upon landing.

Meanwhile, must ask strokes from my flightmates!

Tell you what, any time anyone else comes up from Singapore to play with me, I'll keep an MP52 9 iron in my bag. Then the story can go back to Singapore. How about that? Sounds good?

This site can be fun after all. Very Happy

Good idea. All this talk is beginning to make me miss hitting my Mp52.

Got a game tomorrow morning, with a few of those Malaysian golf forummers who 'don't really like' me, but I think day after that, I'll take them out and see how far I am hitting them now with my new (ie. current) swing.

I'll report back here. If I can, I'll try to video.

All in the name of good fun.

guys don't be so upset with Lee. i read his initial post and i don't think his intention was to brag.

plus i actually agree that it is possible to hit a 9iron 150m, if you deloft it and make solid contact. it's not easy, but definitely possible. especially if you note the fact that loft has more effect on distance than length of club. so when u deloft a 9iron to the loft of eg a 7iron, of course it's possible to hit 150m.

why don't pros do it? cos it's usually easier hitting a 7iron with a normal swing, than a stinger. plus u lose distance control when hitting low running shots.

pls note that i'm not claiming to be able to hit my 9iron 150m. Mine only goes about 130m.

Nope.

But I remember clearly what he said.

He asked, with a serious look on his face, "Can you do it consistently or not?"

Then by way of an answer, I hit a few more over the 150m sign.

In the interest of full disclosure, it was at the Kiara range, upper floor.

I think the question was 190m on 9 iron.. not 150m.
I've seen 150m from a flight mate, but it was no where near 200 meter.

Lee, maybe you can clarify if you meant 150 or 190 meter? if it's the later, I don't know what to say, except we you need to play off black and I'm from white when we bet.

Take it easy guys.

Since the title of this thread is "How far..." and not "How to score..." I was following the title of the thread.

And it's not just theory. I wanted to be discreet, observing the touted asian value of being low-key and modest, but since the word "theory' came out, allow me to just state, I was hitting my Mp-52 9 iron 150 m after about 1 year plus of starting the game. I remember I had a game at Glenmarie, haven't learn to putt yet, hit a ton of greens (about 11 or 12 I recall), 3-putted all over the place, with the final tally of 92.

Recently a friend allowed me to hit his massively offset GI club with a softer steel shaft flex, asking me why he was so short with it, reaching only 140-150m. I delofted it, hands ahead of impact, and sent it approaching the 200m marker at the Glenmarie driving range. (Forgot to add, after hitting a couple of shots to get used to the shaft and offset, of course.)

Eh, hello. This is an uncle in my forties, ok? Average height, average build, don't go to gym summore. What about young men in their 20s and 30s? Should hit it further, right? He he. Jez kidding. Long hitters like Shamusan, etc are of course the exception, well done, keep up the good work.

The point I am making, not that I am fantastic or anything like that, still working on my swing, putting my game together, like many of us. But when some of us are asking, my 7 iron is only 100, 110, 120, is that normal, etc, I think telling them yes, that's not bad, it's ok, etc, is doing them a disservice.

When I was just starting in this game, I researched what the touring pro distances were and set those as my goal, resolving to find out how they did it. Whenever I encounter someone on the range who hits it a mile, I will settle down with my drink behind him and observe. And in the process, learnt how to increase my length and consequently, my game.

And of course, knowing the ideal launch conditions (spin, angle, etc) to achieve optimum carry is also useful, and applicable to diagnosing one's swing.

You can't hit it very far if the swing is not fundamentally sound. There's only so much energy one can get from a flipping chicken wing, not to mention the potential for injury.

When the alignments are out, and compensations are required, the effective parameters of the swing become narrow. Add anymore power, and the timing and alignment of those compensations go out of whack. Same happens when the power is reduced.

Conversely, a sound swing will generate power efficiently and will feel effortless with less wear and tear on the body.

For instance, a good test is to swing the driver and hit shots to 3/4 of our usual distance. It's a neat little trick to test our swing and tempo.

Repeatable distance with a measure of accuracy is a reliable proxy for good swing mechanics, including both geometry and tempo. Swinging correctly will prevent injury, prolonging our longevity in this game.

Which is why I personally pay special attention to distance. Esp if they hit it further than me, using my clubs.

Just sharing my thoughts without any malice or offence intended, peace.

Oh u are right I am so sorry. I assume u used the 9 iron since u were talking about 9 irons. Smile

Pease! flower

Thanks very much, scottycollector.

Some sanity after all.

If I am bragging about anything, I would like to brag that I AM AVERAGE.

Middle age, middle height, middle weight.

And just to point out what is possible with average.

And if it upset enough people to go and re-think their iron distance, and look at their swing, and realize they are capable of so much more than what they are currently getting, then I would be much gratified.

Somehow it got mixed up in this flurry of postings in this very hot HOT thread.

The GI iron I hit belonging to a friend was a 5 iron.

The club face was almost half an inch offset. Chunky bottom line.

The first time I hit it, the offset shut the face so fast I hooked it into the fence.

And luckily for me, you can vouch that 150m with a 9 iron is possible, because you've seen it yourself before with your flight mate.

Otherwise, like the chinese saying goes, "Water wash I also cannot get cleaned!"

Smile

Pease! flower

My bad, my bad.

Typing it at the chicken rice stall after my range session at Kota Permai. So even after careful editing, I failed to specify, the friend's iron I hit was his 5 iron.

My bad.

No wonder people are calling builshit.

No way I can hit 9 iron 200m. My apologies for the boo boo.

Mp52, 9 iron, carry 150m, that's what I meant.
