No one uses 1-iron these days ... Not even the Tour Pros ... The longest iron on the PGA Tour players' bags is 2-iron ... Many also don't use 2-iron and replaces it with hybrid ... Ernie Els, Matt Kutchar, Jim Furyk, etc. also do not have 2i or 3i in their bag ...

try it out yourself? perhaps the following?

1i vs 2i vs 3i vs 4i vs 5i

Off the tee and off the deck (real grass if possible)

If you have a launch monitor, can compare carry vs roll and overall distance. If not, have to eyeball it or go to real course and see where the ball ends up.

If you see clear distance gaps on all, then you clearly have better ball striking that the majority of us and your thoughts and sharing on how to improve ball striking will be much appreciated.

If you see clustering of distance, it indicates a limit.

If you see gaps using a tee, but clustering off deck, explore hybrids (there are many kinds)

If you do not see any gaps, both off tee or off deck, or the 5i gives the best distance consistently, forgiving hybrids and woods are the way to go

If all of the clubs above carry less than 50m, please set realistic targets and practice with an 8i first ...

lol!

My clubhead swing speed is only 80 mph based on “Flightscope” launch monitor.

Each of my fitted irons (Aldila VS Proto Iron 85 R flex) covers a specific distance
2 iron = 160 m carry
3 iron = 150 m carry
4 iron = 140 m carry

Because the 2 iron loft is low (19 degree), I would only use my 2 iron for :
(i)   Iron golf swing training at the range;
(ii)  Tee shot at the tee box
(iii)  When the lie on the fairway is flat & good

A guy I was playing golf with in Europe last week had a 2i in his bag and I asked to hit a few balls with it as I'd never used one before.

It certainly was not easy but if you can use it and feel confident then I say use it. It all depends what you're looking for really.

As a 9 hcp my ball striking is pretty good but consistency with 1i/2i/3i is still not there. I prefer to use the tech on offer in hybrids and fairway woods!

Hi Chunky Munky

I totally agree with you on using equipment (such as hybrids) that yields better consistency to stabilize a golfer’s golf score.

Somehow I got addicted to hitting long irons.
2 iron / 3 iron / 4 iron club heads FEEL lighter and less cumbersome than hybrids (19 deg / 21 deg / 24 deg)
I “FEEL” that I swing faster with long irons than equivalent hybrids.

So I “soldier” on with long irons … LOL

So looking at ur distance can I derive the following for ur short & mid irons distance?

5i - 130m
6i - 120m
7i - 110m
8i - 100m
9i - 90m
Pw - 80m
