| Hole 17 par 5 522
The easiest hole in this course.
Bubba cuts pink driver to left side of the fairway.
Woods 3 wood to the center.
Phil, at +8 after dropping a shot at 16th, finds right rough. Phil needs 2 birdies to be safe from the cut.

Phil's 2nd shot finds the fringe among the bunkers. Tiger's 222 yard approach overshoots the pin and rolls off the shaved right side all the way to the right rough under the trees. Tiger will truly be tested now. Bubba from 211 yard lands on the fringe and is short but safe. Drama continues.

| Just when I thought it was becoming routine and boring, the course bites back and wakes me up.
Will Tiger's short game save him? If his chip is any where short, the ball will roll all the way right back to his feet. It has happened to many players so far.

I am buzzing from the adrenaline. Phil misses his birdie putt, par. Tiger for a remarkable birdie attempt after that amazing escape. A gentle tap and.... it goes just left of the lip. Bubba makes his birdie putt, no fuss. Tiger makes par, disappointed mainly because it is the easiest hole on the course. But considering where he was coming from, a good escape.

Tiger, iron, fairway.
Phil likewise.
Bubba right rough.
Approach, Phil gets it close. Bubba finds right bunker.
Tiger has 121 to the hole, reads the wind carefully and fires. He finds the center bunker in front of the green.

| Phil, Bubba and Tiger climbs up the tall flight of stairs to the high scoring hut.
Announcer gushes, "It's almost like the king is ascending his throne!"
It was quite a day at the office for Tiger. Danger lurking at the slightest lapse of concentration. Both mental and physical abilities fully stretched and tested.
And Tiger battles the course to an even draw for day 2 with 3 birdies and 3 bogeys. T1 at -1 with Furyk and Toms.
Phil finishes at +7 and will likely make the cut.
Bubba at +9 misses the cut.

| Day 1 leader Michael Thompson who started at -4 shoots +5 today and drops to T4 at +4.
This course severely punishes any lapse in focus or error in judgement, with positions changing up and down the leaderboard dramatically.
And this is just day 2. The next 2 days promise to be equally dramatic.

| Following a round like this can be educational in terms of course management especially when we compare a different style like Tiger to Phil and Bubba.
In the first place, Tiger is playing to avoid trouble. And when he gets into trouble, his shot selection is instructive.
It is interesting to watch him work, planning where to land his approach, reading the wind so intently, etc.
And yet even Tiger got too eager at one point and blows the birdie putt past the hole too far and ended up with a bogey.
Kudos to the organisers for setting up this course carefully to be a true test of skill that a US Open is famous for.

This course is really a test of the golfers mental concentration and physical fitness ... Not just pure skill. Indeed ultra small margin for error ... The one who designed this course might be a sadist ... If Tiger can maintain his performance thru weekend, am sure he will be lifting the Jack Nicklaus trophy comes Sunday ...
