That is a "carry distance" for an average PGA distance for 7i. I saw Hunter Mahan and Tiger Woods hitting 169 yards (carry) with an 8i.

| Hit about the same...120m-130m on a good hit but I average on the 110m side...so I always have a problem at MBGC Hole 13 where sometimes it lands and in other cases, it goes over. | |

If coupled with drier air and lower pressure in temperate climate and higher elevation, ball flies further. So, in the context of pro's, easily done. How to put it diplomatically... A nicely delofted 9 iron (hands ahead of ball) with sufficient lag can carry 150m.

| I will gladly give up distance for more consistency. 150m carry for 7 iron, but ball doesn't sit well for me...and it draws when I dead aim...and vice versa. | |

| I will take consistency and accuracy with sufficient distance.
I can hit my 7iron anywhere from 125m to 150m, with a left and right dispersion of 15-20m. would like to tigthen that to 140 +- 3m with left right dispersion of +-3m. that is more important that a 160m 7iron one hit wonder.

You must be talking about tour pros only...theory is all well and good but..... how to put this diplomatically....the only way my 9 iron is going 150m (be it delofted, elongated, super-lagged or whatever)......is if i get confused and grab my 6 iron by mistake..... Anyway, as i always tell myself, the scorecard doesn't give a damn which iron you used to reach the green.......to paraphrase Shorthitter who put it best....my 7-iron goes as far as it goes and if i need more distance, i use a longer club.......ha........

| Take it easy guys.
Since the title of this thread is "How far..." and not "How to score..." I was following the title of the thread.
And it's not just theory. I wanted to be discreet, observing the touted asian value of being low-key and modest, but since the word "theory' came out, allow me to just state, I was hitting my Mp-52 9 iron 150 m after about 1 year plus of starting the game. I remember I had a game at Glenmarie, haven't learn to putt yet, hit a ton of greens (about 11 or 12 I recall), 3-putted all over the place, with the final tally of 92.
Recently a friend allowed me to hit his massively offset GI club with a softer steel shaft flex, asking me why he was so short with it, reaching only 140-150m. I delofted it, hands ahead of impact, and sent it approaching the 200m marker at the Glenmarie driving range. (Forgot to add, after hitting a couple of shots to get used to the shaft and offset, of course.)
Eh, hello. This is an uncle in my forties, ok? Average height, average build, don't go to gym summore. What about young men in their 20s and 30s? Should hit it further, right? He he. Jez kidding. Long hitters like Shamusan, etc are of course the exception, well done, keep up the good work.
The point I am making, not that I am fantastic or anything like that, still working on my swing, putting my game together, like many of us. But when some of us are asking, my 7 iron is only 100, 110, 120, is that normal, etc, I think telling them yes, that's not bad, it's ok, etc, is doing them a disservice.
When I was just starting in this game, I researched what the touring pro distances were and set those as my goal, resolving to find out how they did it. Whenever I encounter someone on the range who hits it a mile, I will settle down with my drink behind him and observe. And in the process, learnt how to increase my length and consequently, my game.
And of course, knowing the ideal launch conditions (spin, angle, etc) to achieve optimum carry is also useful, and applicable to diagnosing one's swing.
You can't hit it very far if the swing is not fundamentally sound. There's only so much energy one can get from a flipping chicken wing, not to mention the potential for injury.
When the alignments are out, and compensations are required, the effective parameters of the swing become narrow. Add anymore power, and the timing and alignment of those compensations go out of whack. Same happens when the power is reduced.
Conversely, a sound swing will generate power efficiently and will feel effortless with less wear and tear on the body.
For instance, a good test is to swing the driver and hit shots to 3/4 of our usual distance. It's a neat little trick to test our swing and tempo.
Repeatable distance with a measure of accuracy is a reliable proxy for good swing mechanics, including both geometry and tempo. Swinging correctly will prevent injury, prolonging our longevity in this game.
Which is why I personally pay special attention to distance. Esp if they hit it further than me, using my clubs.
Just sharing my thoughts without any malice or offence intended, peace.

| Pardon me, 1 year + into the game and you are hitting 9iron to 150m?
Not saying what you said isnt true, but I think it will be more beneficial to everyone here to see an average person's distance instead of tour pros. (Actual person's physic does plays an important factor)
Anyhow, I figured your distance will be quite similar to Ernie Els. (Standing 1.91m) I saw him at the arnold palmer invitational, par 3, 202 yards (~180m) low head wind. He used a 6 iron and was short of the pin.

Well, he he, I do consider myself average. Fanatically obsessed with whatever I am focused on, but average height (1.78m) and average build and below average athletic ability (bookworm instead of a jock). So if I can do it, then just about anyone about my size can do it, it's not that big of a deal really. I did not go to the gym to bulk up, or take any special 'supplement', etc. I'm also average. That's my point.

6 iron 180m, and Ernie was short of the pin? Must have been the wind. And I bet that was a cut shot, which takes off some of the distance. Saw him launch a driver up close before, man, the 'whoosh' is something else! Esp since it looked so effortless. There's that word again!

| 9 iron 150m is not uncommon. Straight dead accurate and repeatable is uncommon. My 9 iron? Just 110-120m. Accuracy so so plus minus 10m sometimes better. Last weekend played Indah puri hole 15 135m with 8 iron.....left about 50cm off the hole.
Moral of the story, distance matter but it's not everything and sometimes it's not even the most important thing. Getting repeatable consistent shot with controllable distance and direction is much more crucial IMHO .
