| I have a golfing story to share with GRs. Please tell me is it fair? I was playing with some guys recently and we decided to use our official handicap as the index to take or give strokes. So 3 guys including me show our handicap card and 1 guy declare his own handicap as "3" because he never bring his handicap card. We all trusted his declaration and accept his self declared handicap. So we finished the game with some good fight and the guy that did the self declared handicap lost by 2 holes to me, 3 holes to the other 2 guys. As usual we proceed to have our lunch. While having lunch, we took out our score card to verify and this self declared guy took out his handicap card and tell us he found it and his actual handicap is 8! So after re-calculation, he won everyone! Do you all think this is fair to the losing 3 guys? | |

| I don't think it's gentlemanly for him to declare himself a 3 and then produce evidence that he's an 8.
But, I don't think it would have changed how you played, right? I'm assuming you played strokeplay and not matchplay.
Note that the closest I've come to a single handicap is after the first 2 holes so take my opinion with a pinch/bucket of salt if needed.

| if he has declared 8 initially, will it make a difference to the end score? Would the other three played better?
off by 5 from the actual HCP is a bit strange.... next time if betting this way, take out a phone and log in to sga.gov.sg and check the official HCP...

I thought buaya is for those who under-declared the handicap i.e. the other way around?

| Huh ! Like that also can. It is consider late declaration and shud be DQ. Unfair as golf is a menatl and skill game and this tactics throw the other golfers off guard..More dangerous than Buaya..Must come out with a new name for this type of player who overdeclare/under declare themselves. | |

It will be a different that we are playing match play. Example like you play 4 to reach green, I hole out at 5 with index. I will ask you to pick up your ball because no meaning for you to putt anymore. Meaning you will write a 5 on your score card and I will also write a 5 but with index, I have won you on that hole. Then later you tell us that your handicap is higher, meaning that hole you have index too. So it will become that you have half me without having to putt that long putt (That I gave). Is it fair? You tell me again.

In matchplay, for the stroke holes, it would definitely make a difference in how you approach the hole...rather than force a GIR, you can then go for three on (for a par 4)...also, maybe there's no need to charge a putt, knowing you have a stroke in hand...so it does matter what you declare.. having said that, this is exactly why i don't bet with strangers...are you telling me that this guy doesn't know he's an 8 and "mis-read" his h'cap as 3? complete bullsh*t....and probably over a few dollars only.... I have 2 pet peeves when playing golf...one is the shameless buaya and the second are the ones who ask for so many strokes, i may as well just hand over my wallet....now i have 3rd category!!!!

matchplay definitely will have differnce... you guys allow him to change his HCP?? I think he is not allow to change to a higher hcp after tee off....

| To me,,, I will void the bet at worse. there will be no fair or unfair..Both can be argued..best is to settie R & R upfront. Usually when strokes given, then it should stay for the game. In this case, I would say he lose lah...or void... he cannot win! like this swee boh? | |
