| Very simply, a round of golf is broken into 2-nines. A high hcp player, say 24 hcp is playing with a mid hcp player, say 16, then in theory, the mid hcp player can offer to give the high hcp player 4-4. That means for the 4 indexed holes in front nine, the high hcp player gets 1 extra stroke, similarly for the 4 indexed hole is back nine.
Very often, we haggle over the strokes to give / be given. Common excuses for not giving strokes are 'last week low score is my one-off, I just changed my swing, my new shaft not run in yet, blah blah...'
If you still don't understand, just play one round with GRians and pay 'school fees'

| Strokes are actually based on usga rules of golf, the handicap systems is created, amongst other reasons, to facilitate competition between players with different skill level. So a 20 hcap can play along a 10hcap on a strokeplay competition. The 20 hcap gets strokes from the 10hcap in matchplay. Were supposed to based it on course handicap, but it is not practiced here. Course handicap is influenced by the difficulty of the course, or course rating/slope rating. Because higher handicap golfers is affected more by a difficult course than better players do. Hence the slope. Strokes are given on the lower index holes (more difficult holes). 1-1 means 1 stroke given on the Front nine and 1 Stroke on back nine. If we use the course handicap table, it is possible for more than one strokes given on a very difficult hole. But maybe for simplicity, i seldom see it being practiced. Betting to me is the stakes of match. Are you playing for $50, makan, a massage or just for bragging rights? There are many game formats like snakes, vegas, olympic, sixes etc. Those formats may negate the use of stroking. Strokes are generally used in cut throat or individual/team matchplay and strokeplay. Do you bet for fun/laughs, for the thrill/pressure or for the money? The difference between recreational golfers, serious golfers and buayas/buayees hustlers | |

| at the start, keep it simple. Play skins. all agree on the amount for the hole before the start of the game. Example say $5 per hole. 4 in the flight, winner of the hole pockets $15.
This assuming all are of smilar standard. WHen you get more competent in betting or "Excitment" you can start to give / take strokes per hole, sandy par, up & down etc etc.

| Wah you guys are confusing me and did I see $500?!?! *gulp*
So let me give an example to see if I get it right. For example my handicap is 24 and say pushslice's handicap is 16. So say he give me 4-4. Does that mean 4 of the most difficult holes in the front 9 and 4 on the most diff 4 holes? Meaning if the most diff hole is a par 5 and if I had a bogey and pushslice had a par, we will be even for this hole and basically we will be betting for only 4 holes in the front nine and the rest are friendly? So the maximum is a 9-9? What happens if one usually plays 78 and another who usually play 110, how many strokes should be given?
