Hi Rex....yes i have seen and read Stan Utley book as well as work with Paul Tudor of RSS.

between the two, the RSS putting stroke is more natural because of the increased length in the putter and the flat lie required to make the natural gate putt. its great that you noticed Stan Utley contradiction or should we say a lack of understanding of a greater universe. I have unconfirmed source that says he also cannot do what he preaches consistently when he gets onto the SAM. i have always believe that the problem is in the particular gripping style.

as for eye over ball, that concept has been challenged and its proven that it is not a sure ingredient for success.

Why?? because everyone has different master and dominant eye for short, medium and long distance. The dominant eye can be the left for the long and and the right for the short distance and vice versa. Just trained your eyes on a distance object and cover one eye at a time, see which is clearer. Not look at an object that's maybe 15 ft away and do the same exercise. its not uncommon that the dominant eye can shift.

and i fully agree with this "he mentioned that he will always want to fit people but correcting technique is 1 of the ways to making the fitting session easier. No point fitting a person when their technique is all out of wack".

at the end of the day, golfers who are new to the game should spent more time practicing their putt under supervision.

Speaking about cocking the wrist, it was highly fashionable in the 70s but putters were made differently back in those days and the bullseye putters demanded a lot more knocking action. Greens were slowly in those days too.

Next question i have for you Rex...when do you rate your game to be at its best? Now or something back. What do you think was the reason?

btw Paul i was writing this when you responded...haha

Good points DGman. One thing that is certain about eye position is that there has never been a player in history that has won a major who has his eyes on the outside of the ball. Having a longer putter will ensure this will not happen.

I generally find eyes over the ball will give straight back straight thru, inside of the ball is best for slight arc. Outside of the ball will encourage an outside to outside stroke which doesn't work. If your putter is too short you may have this last eye position and stroke.

putting with eyes close is good... We tend to depend alot on our eyes once you close you eyes, you have to depend on other parts of your body to make the stroke. More importantly, you have to trust your stroke. Once you have the trust on your stroke, you have confidence...

On green, your mind will be clearer and not over analyse the green

ChrisD, while wating for your idol to be back, have you tried reading the green from the back of the hole...meaning walk to the other opposite side where your ball and the hole lines up. squat down and i am sure you can see your path better.

as a rough guide, at least half the distance for putts over 30 ft and for shorter putts, same distance should do.

I know where you are getting at Eric. I think your point is that sometimes the less we know or care, the better we play.

I understand the game alot better now than I did last year. However, the lack of practice due to work here has not enabled me to fulfill my potential as of late.

The 'Dark Times' was during the period when I had information overload late last year; where I was fed with so many new ideas from S & T instructors, David Bedwetter Academies and One Plane Swing advocates. That was the time when I din know how to play golf anymore and started to shoot some horrendous scores in the mid 80s.

I have since swayed away from all these thoughts and just got back to playing golf the simple way - getting the ball into the hole with the fewest possible strokes I can afford per hole. Nowadays, even with limited practice of once a week, I still can knock it around in 70+ strokes. Putting is just reading the break and line instead of thinking about my stroke, aim, stance etc which should have been sorted out at home or the practice green.

PS: Just came back from a quick 18 and shot 77. Had 6/14 FIR, 8/18 GIR and 28 putts. Sure the FIRs and GIRs are pretty pathetic but hey, what matters to me is the score at the end...and thats pretty ok for me considering I range once a week here instead of 5 times a week like I used to in Sg

DGman,

Thanks for your tips. I will ask you how it works pratically when I visit if can find time to eat snakes one of these days.
Controlling of distance should be quite fine but I am more concern of the break.
Sometimes I will read left to right but infact it's the other way round.
When the line is read wrongly, my putting will end up with 3 putts.
Maybe should ask 4dtoto on how to read greens as have heard that he is well known for doing so.

Hi Golfers,

Does anyone here know a shop that allows golfers to rent or loan demo putters for a short while in order to get a feel in a game??

Also, what are some of the critical factors to consider when selecting a reasonable good putter since there are so many designs and brands in the market.

Thanks !

Bryson
