PostSubject: Key points for putting   Key points for putting I_icon_minitimeWed Jul 21, 2010 9:59 am

Personally, these are my key point to improve putting.

1. For distance more than 30ft - 45ft - first putt must be within 1 ft
2. For distance more than 45ft - 60ft - first putt must be within 3 ft
3. For distance more than 60ft or more - first putt must be within 5ft

beginners like myself do not know how to read the line.
So what I normally practice is get the feel of the distance and
get near the hole within the above target.
Therefore I will normally end with 2 putt or worst 3 putts max.

Just my opinion.

My mantra for long putts is something I inherited from Duval_S.

Lay up!

LOL!

to obtain the right distance.

I know the answer to this one!!!

Haha. the only way to know is to go to the den and find out for yourself.

One hint is that its only 3 to 4 inches depending on your size

One thing I picked up fm my coach (ie Golf Channel) for reading line is to imagine throwing bucket of water on the green fm where your ball is...........that at least helps me to visualize the slope....

does it help me to read the line like pro? NO.....but it at least help me to visualize the uphill downhill variables.

AM I better after using this? YES...but only slightly better....sighhhhhhh

need some tips from some gurus.

my weakest putting area is the 3 to 6 feet distance when the hole is on a slope.. mind you its the type that you think will break or will not break type.

i try to putt firm in the hole but it breaks. i try to let it die into the hole but it don't break.
what's the best way to attack this type of hole?

do you know what is Phil Mickelson nick on the tour...haha...he is called 3 foot Phil cos thats the weakest part of his game and there is a reason why?

if i start on this one, its going to be very long and may upset some people because putting is above all else...all about confidence and predictability.

Mizzy, also have the same problem here. Some times don't know break left or right or straight. But worst come to worst I always Bo chap and ended with another putt by putting near to the hole within 1 ft. Hahaha probably I don't have much expectation of myself.

yes Phil always miss those 3 footers.. its always when i cannot read the 3 to 6 footers that I miss.. when i see a straight putt or a curve putt, I have high confidence and high chance to make it.

DGman, won't you please start something on this area? or at least PM me. hehehe.. no upset other peeps.. Laughing

yes, that's good advice. high chance of making the hole. if not fall short is 0% making the hole.

but somehow for me i always hit too firm and it doesn't break.. Sad

Ok here goes the first in the series....

there are basically 4 types of putting strokes...

1. gate back gate trough (commonly know as open and shut putt)
2. gate back straight through (open and straight puttt)
3. gate straight straight through (straight and straight putt)
4. gate straight close trough (straight and shut putt)

of these 4 types of putting, only 1 is naturally and the other 3 are what we termed as manipulative. Do you know which is natural?

of course this is also the start of the putting woes, you want to know why right???

to be continued cos got to go to work liao.

ya ya.. how you know????

that's why i dumped my blade and use a semi mallet.
blade i will twist the face for those short putts somehow...
mallet will help reduce that twisting...
so i try a compromise.. thanks to bro asahi.. cheers

@ DGman, I think i read that Jack Nicholas.. I think it was him, who said he used different putting strokes for different greens and even different breaks..

for me.. 1 type is enough.. mine is option 1. the others I just try and screw up
