for myself, i really like to keep these points in mind:

1. short game - chipping it close, making the key putts
2. eliminate the blow up holes - taking one shot at a time and don't get frustrated with the bad ones
3. course management - playing a golf course smart and not trying to go for the miracle shot all the time

That's genius!!

1. Usually for me, my drive has to be good, not necessary far but relatively straight on fairway and no trouble. Sometimes may use wood or iron for tight fairway.
2. Approach shot must be reasonably straight. If never On, it must be somewhere near for short chip to green.
3. If par 5, always go for 3 on with a good manageable approach shot.
4. Chip on and aim for 1-2 putts max.

Just my 2 cents.

Whatever happens, keep it in the fairway.

I was lucky to go below 90 like 3-4 times ever. What I do recall were
1. Hit fairway 
2. Patience ..... Not every hole I shld max out my 2nd shot. I actually think and plan before I decide what to do for me 2nd shot
3. I play and bet stroke play.... Meaning every stroke count

Short game and putting.... can help recover a bad tee off shot. Esp putting... line read before committing the putt. Alot of golfers tend to rush through their putting without even lining up their ball to the hole.

Looks like I got to find a coach to teach me short game to play below 90.

OB, Lost ball, water, bunker n 3 putted = U pay your flight mate 5$ each
SLOW play oso pay extra 10 for food

sandy par, over 2 flag stick putt, = U collect 5$ from each mate
Even U 5 on par 3 or 7 on par 5
Birdy collect $10 from each
Every hole that did not fini pay another extra 10 for food
no give up,  cannot consider double par.
eagle, forget it no chance to do that if you cannot make 90
every stroke over 90 pay 10$ for food.

This is what I kana when I played in Vietnam.
It is good to keep U on toe. 
AND sure we have a very good dinner after the game.

OK play with KSLS 18 handicappers will help.
U STArt paying until U hit below 90.
invite kakis u know and they oso know U
else can play 7 shout 6 and write 5.  (still the pencil more powerful hor)
