PostSubject: Super Game Improvement vs Game Improvement / Tour Irons   Super Game Improvement vs Game Improvement / Tour Irons I_icon_minitimeTue Jun 22, 2010 11:39 pm

hi people,

started the game a year ago with a 2nd hand cally x20 tour irons. but as a newbie , swing not consistent yet , hence some snr golfer advice the follow.

clan a : should "downgrade" to those super improvement irons i.e Cobra S2 Max, or mizzy MX1000 , so i could enjoy the game better at this stage (lesser mistake maybe)

clan b : should stay put with x20 tour, becos when a player become "seasoned" , those super improvement irons offer "no feel"... or bored....

any advise ? help ....

In my opinion, invest more in developing the swing...

Changing the equipment could be more expensive than engaging a swing coach..
Unless you already have one and he advised you to change the equipment.

I agree with Taskie.. The right choice is to invest on a good coach. From my personal experience, I used to hit my MP57 very poorly. Initially, I thought some thing is out, may be I am not suited for the irons. Once, I engage on a coach, he really help me to improve my game, I now swing better, stronger, more consistently.

So, don't waste your money on the gears. Focus on yr swing. Invest in training yourself instead.

Use this thread to ask a question. I know there is a "practice" club thing that collapse if you swing it wrongly but remains rigid if you swing it correctly. Anyone knows what I'm talking about and where to find this thing?

Its called a medicus iron. Its selling about 100 - 200 plus from US. So far, I have not seen any vendor having it here. Have a friend who have them - iron and driver, he seldom uses it.

Hi Khan,

It might be a cheaper alternative to get an instructor to look at your technique first. and then advice you accordingly.

Based on Maltby's MPF rating (a scientific measurement (COG, MOI,etc) approach on how easy an Iron is to play).
http://www.franklygolf.com/2009MPFRatingsChart.pdf

The X-20 Tour has a rating of 716 (Super Game Improvement). Its often mentioned by Ralph Maltby that you have to go up about 300 points before you really feel the difference, so about 300 points above that would be like the normal X-20 or FT I-Brids (1051 and 1160 respectively).

Of course everyone feels differently about clubs, but I tend to use that as a buying guide when it comes to clubs I want to try.

Bro Aural,

For the benefit of other reader. I post a picture of this collapse iron training aid that I have. Unfortunately, I brought this in Indonesia not in Singapore.

Yupz something like that. Saw my uncle with one of these many years ago but it breaks into more section. I saw from the web that they have this 2 sections type only.
Would love to get one of these to train up my swing.

Not very popular these days, but it is one of the classic swing trainers that if I remember, corrected swing plane. But it was difficult and a real pain to use, at least when I tried it years ago.

Yes, I agreed. It is difficult to use. I sometime though that my swing plane was okay but it still break ... Or maybe my swing plane really still "screw - up" Embarassed

When come to club it is very individual. I have seen mid to high handicappers who uses difficult blade club and i have seen single digit handicapper who uses SGI club.

If you talk to CustomGolf who sells Ping, the guy is a single digit handicapper and still play a G15 which is a SGI club. According to him, the forgiving club really comes in handy during those days when your body or swing is just not up to mark, and the club will not penalize you as much.

To me, i think the X20 is a very good club. Unless it is broken, why fix it?

Interetsing chart dude

So that means the lower the ratings the harder it is for mid/high hcp to use?

It is really your preference. More often then not, it's the operator, rather than the equipment problem. Like most of the comments, the X20 is a very good set. Unless you don't like the looks and feel of the X20.

The other thing could also be the shaft, where it could be too stiff or flex for you. Engage in a good fitter to determine the shaft suitability and a qualify coach to analyse your swing.

SGI irons also not that easy to hit, those Pros comment how easy it is to hit 150 with the 7i of a SGi cause of its high MOI, shovel size, jacked up loft etc, can do so cause they are Pros, not because they are using a SGI......

like my case definitely swing fault. I already have the most forgiving irons and driver and still cannot hit straight.

Unfortunately have no $$ and too stubborn to get a coach.

If I am not wrong, some tour player uses G15 as well, e.g. K.J.Choi..
