Improvement Irons

Was reading some topics/online on improvement irons...but not sure "exactly" what it meant. Does it help newbies like me who has high handicap, inconsistent swing and short drives etc...improve the game lol

There are 2 schools of thoughts

(1) believes that GI irons are bad for developing a sound swing as swing flaws are masked and shots still fly close to intended line

(2) believes that GI irons are good for the ever improving golfer enjoy the game as he develops his swing

No right or wrong. Some PGA professionals are also using cavity backed GI irons.

From what I know, there are 3 broad types of irons out there:

1. Player irons. Typically blades. For low handicappers. Good for shot shaping. Eg. Ping i20, Mizuno MP-64, Titleist AP2.

2. Game Improvement irons. Typically muscle-back or cavity-back irons. For mid to high handicappers. Quite forgiving. Wide sole. Eg. Ping G20, Mizuno JPX-800 Pro, Titleist AP1.

3. Super Game Improvement irons. Like Game Improvement irons but even more so. Intended for high handicappers, beginners etc. Very forgiving. Eg. Ping K15, Mizuno JPX-800 HD, TM Rockeballz Max.

Actually I would put the Pro Blade and Combo/Cavity as Players Irons, the Machspeed as GI and the Slingshot series as Super GI ... but yes ... we get the point

i just put more choices for bro and sis here...

so in another words...newbies like myself shld start with GI or Super GI? But do these "improvement" realli help me to improve since there are 2 school of thoughts...lol

Get what looks pleasing to your eyes..
Nothing worse than looking down at the clubs and thinking they are big and ugly.. or thinking how the heck can someone hit something that small.......

Improves your game as mishit shots still fly but does not necessarily improves your skills

The SQ Machspeed did give me a hard time initially. And couple it with a NSPro 950, even my instructor advised that it is a little heavy for me.

So when I tried my friend's Mizuno JPX 800 Forged, it felt like I'm swinging twigs.

GI/SGI clubs are intended to help prevent mishits and help struggling golfers. But, if there are inherent flaws in your swing, it may be better to invest in seeing a coach (I keep telling that to myself.)

But certainly, you'll enjoy the game more if you're a newbie golfer if you started out with a GI/SGI set. Obviously, this assumes that you're like the rest of us landscape artists rather than those born with inherent talent like Rory.

when still a PC golfer, any iron set that FEEL light will do. As you break 100, you most probably going to hit your 7I pretty well. Breaking 90, your long irons is pretty good at the moment.
If you intend to change to a heavier iron set like steel shafts, your long irons will suffer and thats where GI, SGI and hybrids came into picture. You get control on short and mid irons with heavier shafts but you need forgivingness at long irons.

Regarding the swing, some of us would say my driver is ok but how come my long irons are like shyt. I think that some of us need a heavier to lighter club as the irons get less loft.
