| I agree, why stress over such mundane issue ... We are already subjected to the drudgery of over daily working life and hence, to stress over such mundane issue should be the last thing on our mind ... | |

| Actually he is not wrong to say that you are in his sight.. and probably is affecting his pratice shots.. but like all the other responses to your post, he should politely tell you to move instead of being so rude so that he can finish and pass you the bay.... Even in actual game on the course, especially on the tee box, some golfers like to stand directly behind me when I tee off... I have to politely ask to them to move away so that I can fully concentrate on my swing....... This inludes putting also... sometime I get kaisu golfers who literally stand benhind line of putt to see the break to their advantage.... .. that is wrong..... Golf is a gentlemen game - a little politness will make the game or pratice session in your case more enjoyable....... .. | |

| If the Japanese guy is not comfortable that he is being watched, he could have just take a short break. Perhaps, walk away from the bay or take a toilet break or get a drink. | |

your head turn with your swing or putting to see behind? I believe he meant directly behind the line of target and not behind the golfer ... Standing behind or infront (but a distance away) of the golfer is pretty safe ...

| I supposed directly behind the line is 180o whereas the human eyes has a view angle of 120o by looking straight down the ball. he is still short of 30o unless he turn his head or shifted his eye ball.
or the other player is standing dangerously close

or the other player is standing dangerously close This would hold true if your eyes/ head is directly over the ball aka Michelle wie, normal should be able to see up to 3-5 meters up/down the target line. So u swing like Michelle Wie?

your head turn with your swing or putting to see behind? Its more of a feeling rather than visually. U like ppl to be standing on the course to be behind your extended line of play? The rules of golf does not disallow it as long as they are not your partner/caddie, but the golf etiquette does state that it is a no. But agree that the guy takes it a bit too much on the range and the entire situation can be handle much better. But that also means that we should too be "seng mok" (sensitive) about this, at least for me if I want to take a bay.. 1) I will ask if he/she is finishing at a appropriate time. And 2) asked if I can be next to take over. 3) If all yes, then I will leave my golf bag there.. and take a slow walk to the cafe area or stilling area and wait.

| At the driving range, do you tell the guy in front of you to stand still and not swing while you are taking your shot so as not to distract you? I don't think it's fair to compare range practice vs playing on course. | |

Agree. IMHO.. for me at least.. it is not about the person standing directly in front or at your back.. it the one standing in your line of play. Reason is not really about disturbing.. it is about me feeling that I might hit him/her.. If you been to tpy range.. there are some bays that are so narrow.. even ppl walking outside the red line.. you might feel that they are near (especially on the 2nd storey), although realistically speaking, you will not be able to.. but the feeling is always there.. These are the bays that I might feel that i might hit ppl.. and therefore limit my swing width and affects my practice as part of my mind will keep a look out.

True.. but on the other hand, one wouldn't really bother about the person in front or behind him/her, cus they are doing their own thing and are not "spectators". some ppl just dun like it when being watched. makes them feel uncomfortable. but shouting?? he's just as guilty lor...

| theoretically , to have view of 5m up/down each way , u need to be about 3m tall.
to stand behind line of the golfer teeing off is to see the direction of his shot otherwise who will bother? standing at the back a golfer putting/teeing/hitting off is consider bad manners.
there are rules and etiquettes and also grey areas . To me, its my pleasure to show the line of putt to my follow kakis as long as they keep still n quiet. I often offer them beers if they could sink that birdie putt so I can have a happy time too.

For me I dun mind as long as they keep still. But personally I dun do it.

| This seems to be a 'ranting' thread and seems to go on forever.. from range to green and back to range.. Just feel that it should really make way for more productive dsicussions...
And on the range, as long as the other people (non-playing) is standing behind the red/yellow line, its really their business and that is absolutely nothing one can do about it... There are other individuals hitting behind and in front of you, so its just amazing how 'unaffected' we are to that... If you are on the range, just suck it up, get into your zone, focus on your own bay, hit your own golf balls, and move out when you are done (so that others can come in).. What could be more simpler than that? aiyo...
And the discussion on "should/can i stand near to others when they are putting" on the actual green... This is what USGA Q&A says:
Rule 14-2Standing on Extension of Line of Play or Line of Putt Q. My opponent or fellow-competitor always stands behind me while I am playing a stroke? Isn`t this a penalty? A. Rule 14-2b only prohibits a player from allowing his partner or their caddies from standing in this position. While it may be a breach of Etiquette, there is no penalty under the Rules. A solution is to politely ask your opponent or fellow-competitor to move to one side or the other. (Rule 14-2b)
