Just sharing my experience with pain in joints due to golf.

I golf about 3 to 5 times a week.  And mostly walking.  About 3 months ago, I went through a dip in form and experimented in many ways to get my game back.  It is during this period that I started to hit the ball more aggressively, trying to find a way to hit it longer and straighter.  That was when my left knee, shoulder and elbow started feeling discomfort.

Before this, I had absolutely no pain for the past 5 to 6 years with the same playing frequency.  I thought that age has caught up with me and my body finally couldn't take the repetitive movements anymore.

Then 2 weeks ago, I played the worst game I could have possibly played and decided to quit the game since I couldn't enjoy the game anymore and also with the multiple joint pain, the decision was an easy one.

However, I have always been the person who books the tee times and amass the troops, I still continued the usual coordination work.  My buddies persuaded me to play as we were one ball short. So lan lan have to play.

I decided that I will take it easy and just move the ball forward without any expectations.  I stopped lunging at the ball and hitting up on it. I stopped forcibly turning my wrist to create the draw and I stopped limiting my shoulders from turning to keep it perpendicular to the target line etc etc.

A nice easy swing with no restrictions to a free flowing body movement.

I shot a good score..... hahahaaha.... Easy swing with no expectations.  What a pleasant surprise!

And guess what? It has been two weeks and the joint pain is 80% gone!  I did not go for any medical help at all.

What I finally realize is this:
Professional golfers like Fred Couples, Bernhard Langer,Dustin Johnson, Ernie Els, Adam Scott.  They play and practice more than amateurs like us but they are still hitting without any injuries.  The senior tour players are still going on strong at their age!

If I am getting joint pain, I am obviously doing something wrong with my swing.

I realized the following:
Left Knee pain:
I was lunging down to initiate my downswing and then straightening up during the throughswing.  The knee was not meant to take that kind of stress.

What I did to rectify:
I minimized the flex at setup (stood taller) and kept the knees very quiet throughout the swing.

Result:
left knee pain totally gone.

Left elbow pain:
I was trying to keep the elbow close to my rib and turning my wrist, trying to create a draw shot. This movement is actually causing a lot of restrictions to the natural body movement.

What I did to rectify:
I kept my clubhead square to the target at impact and then just let the momentum dictate the rest of the body movement after impact.

Result: elbow pain now going away. I am confident that it will be gone by next week.

Shoulder pain:
Again, the restrictive movement that caused my elbow pain was the same cause for my shoulder pain.

What I did to rectify:
Same

Result:
Pain gone.

Pain Bros, keep the swing free flowing and NONE RESTRICTIVE!
