Sorry for the OT (in typical GR fashion) ... but damn she is hot!

And now back to the topic at hand ...

While the statement above is not completely untrue, it is really a question of definition and expectation. An equally true statement would be:

If you CAN'T play, doesn't matter which clubs you use

Neither statement is really helpful.

Give Tiger or Rory or any other top ranked professional golfer any (and only) 2 clubs (or even 1) plus a putter and they will completely kick most of our asses if we are dumb enough to play scratch with them. The gap is simply too big for the clubs to make a difference.

However, if they were to play with the same limitations against another professional golfer ranked outside the top 200, I doubt they would be able to win.

Translating this to social golfing terms ... if as a 30+ handicap, you play against your mid handicap friends (assume +/- 15) on a level basis, you are going to lose (as long as everyone is honest about their handicaps). No amount of equipment is going to close that gap. Your mid-handicap friend might then be inclined to think that he can beat you with any kind of clubs (which would be a true statement).

This same mid-handicap guy however, will have a completely different mindset if he was playing someone his own standard, with whom he has a win/loss record close to 50/50. I doubt he would be brave enough to say that since he has game, any kind of clubs will do.

The same example can be translated to 2 scratch players of the same standard, if they were to play against the mid-handicapper on a level basis, they would probably win using any type of clubs (even junior clubs), but would be hard pressed to do so against someone of their own standard.

If you are playing just to enjoy being outdoors with your friends and you do not bet or care about your score, then it really does not matter which clubs you use. But how many of us are really capable of not caring? no matter how much we claim it is so.

If you do bet occasionally, or take your score seriously, or are just trying to get better, then the equipment you use can make a difference. The right equipment might not make you play better, but the wrong equipment can definitely make you play worse.

Another way to look at it (from a statistics perspective) is that the impact of your equipment on your score probably follows an inverted U shaped distribution

In layman's terms, the impact of your clubs on your score will be less at both ends of the scale (skill level). If you suck all the time, you will continue to suck no matter what clubs are in your hands. If you are a scratch player, you will find a way to minimise the damage from using clubs not suited for you (scratch players have enough control of their swing to do this). For the rest of us in between, the difference in scores between playing with a familiar set and an unfamiliar set will be pretty large.

Longer post than intended, but I hope that I managed to put my ideas across without causing too much confusion (or misunderstanding).

I guess just about anyone can hit just about any club if u let them hit more than 1 ball. Our bodies and minds are all somewhat capable of making adjustments to hit the ball. But what's important is can u be consistent hitting that club.

No offense though, but for 20+ handicappers, Try engaging a coach to improve the swing first. I think the coach would mention something if he/she feels that the stix are not suitable for u. eg.. if u're a really strong hitter and u have an iron with R flex graphic shafts.

I think it comes down to which stage of the game u're in, or are u serious about ur game or just doing it to pass time or it could be a form or exercise to some.

Guys trying to break 100, 90, 80, 70. etc. i think we'll all have different mindsets at different levels of the game and also cus our knowledge of the game has increase by then.

As much as i'd like to agree with most ppl that "its the golfer, not the equipment." but I also feel that if you're competitive in ur game, u'd look for anything to give u an advantage over ur opponents and also to instill more confidence. I guess that's when a golfer goes to look for a fitter and trying out different clubs to see what suits them best.

No right or wrong here, just different schools of thoughts.

I think very much depends on how you define "can play". Picking up any clubs to hit a few balls, most ppl can do it, but playing it well on course, will be another story.

I have witness a scratch golfer hitting one over in warren before with a set of clubs which I loan for him. The greens were rolling ard 10 that day. Driver was A flex and irons think some nspro callaways. Ask him how u did it, he told me trusting ur swing and getting use to the clubs and course fast is the difference between a good golfer and an average golfer. He told me if u always look at the equipment when there is a problem, then u are in trouble.

That's why some fitter told me, during a tournament the pro will fit the clubs before the warmup round. If they are still tweaking their club during that time, they can forget abt winning.

Good clubs make a good golfer better. Good clubs give hope to a shit golfer that he/she can be better.

Note the difference.

Swing aside. What makes a truly good golfer is how he/she articulates the obstacles given and shows the right mental fortitude on overcoming them.

Which is why most" low handicap golfers" specially those that play Malaysia every week cant play for shit in courses with tournament condition tuned courses.

It's a mental conditioning thingy.

Hope it helps Smile

Well it's simply because they are used to the conditions of the courses they play weekly and are usually out of they're depth when faced with quality courses.

There's a reason no major tournaments are held in poresia.. Etc .

And imo Anne Hathaway would hv been a better example compared to Scarlett Johannson.. She's hotter..

haha both pretty hot... me abit late here but thought i'd contribute w a visual aid for those still undecided...hehe
