HELP: London Courses

HI HI..

Just wondering whether anybody has any recommendation of good golf courses near Central London..

Might be there end August.. Not keen to drive for hours, thus rather play around London..

The best would be if somebody is there at that time

I know there are several course around heathrow, condition and price not sure. Last time not into golf yet.

If I'm not wrong, most of the UK public course are around 50-60 gbp...unless you are talking abt the famous one like carnoustie, old course, royal lytnam etc, gleneagles. But that's years ago not sure now, but don't think price go up for those. Most of them walking...

you might want to try out stoke park then. it's expensive but worth every penny. it's the best course i've played in london. it's close to heathrow, so i'm guessing it would take about 40mins to over an hour to get there from central london depending on which areas you're passing through.

another course near heathrow is richings park golf club. decent course, quite maintained, although it's nothing spectacular. pretty flat course, but still enjoyable. if i remember correctly it's £35 on weekends

within central london itself there are quite a number of clubs, alot of which welcome visitors, you can book tee times at some of these at www.teeofftimes.co.uk. of these i've played at hendon golf club and finchley golf club. both are pretty well maintained and i'm guessing they'll be in very good shape in the summer. they're actually right next to each other, although hendon is pretty flat and short, and finchley is a littly hillier and more challenging.

haha i study in london but i'm back for the summer, so i won't be there. i've never been to any of those courses, but i guess wentworth club should be top-class since it hosts the bmw championship. other than stoke park which i've been to once, the courses i frequent are just the affordable and accessible ones.

no worries, have a good time. if you can just check the forecast for your golfing plans and avoid the rainy days. it's really crappy when it rains in london, even in summer

You could try going to croydon, about 25 mins train from victoria.
Plenty of decent courses ranging from £25-40 depending on weekday or weekend.
Its relatively quiet and course conditions are quite good.

Can you comment on courses like Sunningdale, Wentworth & Warton Heath. Their prices are much more than those croydon but wondering whether the overall conditions are very much better too.

Also how would you compare those courses to those in Singapore? Similar to occ mbgc Tmcc or ?

Hi guys, i missed the earlier thread by chien. anyway, i lived in central london for a year and i played golf every week. so i dare say i know the golf courses there at the back of my hand =)

anyway, it all depends on what you're looking for. Are you looking to play at famous courses, or are you just looking to play at any course which is near and accessible from central london?

as i was living in the heart of london at that time, it didnt make sense to own a car. as such, i always take the tube whenever i play golf. the taxi fare in london is just way too expensive - it'd cost 3 or 4 times the green fee.

so anyway, let me just start by sharing the courses accessible by the tube / rail

1. Trent Park golf course - by far my favourite. Nice and interesting course. 5min walk from oakwood station. Can be quite crowded so make sure you book in advance. Well stocked pro shop at very reasonable prices. Cheaper than Singapore.

2. Fairlop waters. 10min walk from Fairlop station. This is a public parkland course, which is full of wild rabbits. Easy and almost boring course. Yardage is long but fairways are typically wide and greens are in average - poor condition. BUT during summer, if you play twilight golf ie after 4pm, it's 11pounds for 18 holes. where to find??? also, if u go in july, there are wild raspberries growing in bushes all along the fairway. Sweetest and 'wildest' raspberrie's i've ever eaten.

3. Wanstead golf course. 5-10 min walk from Wanstead station. This is a member's course but also open to public. Course is well maintained. Fairly tough course with narrow fairways.

4. Richmond Park golf course. This is a public course located within Richmond park. You got to travel by rail to Mortlake station. The walk from the rail is quite long - about 30min. It's nice in that you can combine your golf with a visit to Richmond park, where you can see the famous wild deer and buck roaming the park. it's quite a sight to behold. The golf course itself is similar to Fairlop waters. ie wide fairways, straightforward and poor greens. lots of ducks, geese and foxes.

5. Ealing golf club. 15min walk from Perivale station. Member's course but open to public. I don't really remember much of it. Only played once during winter when there was a thick fog.

6. Playgolf Northwick Park. Walkable from a few tube stations. I haven't actually played there although i've always wanted to. It's a 9 hole course that's mirrored after 9 famous holes of the world. Damn cool concept. I'm definitely going there next time i'm in london

7. Stockley Park golf course. This is the course nearest to Heathrow but not walkable from train stations. You got to take taxi. One of the nicest courses in central london. Challenging and well maintained.

8. East Brighton Golf club. In the event that you are travelling down to Brighton for a sea side holiday, then this is a MUST GO. Beautiful course with breathtaking views. Many of the holes are perched on high ground and u can see the sea. Wide fairways but difficult becos it's super windy.

9. And of course, if you are able to travel far out....then St. Andrews Old course! I still feel the goosebumps thinking about my experience standing on the 1st tee. If you are one ball, u can simply go to the marshall at 5am in the morning and get a queue number. they will simply slot u in an afternoon tee time. u can go back and sleep once u get ur 'queue number'.

Final words of advice:
1. make sure you check http://www.teetimes.co.uk & http://www.teeofftimes.co.uk for discounted greenfees.
2. Bring a light weight stand bag with fewer clubs eg half set. Hardly anyone takes the buggy in london. plus it's a more complete experience to walk the course.

I lived in london for 3 years but was not into golf back then, but whenever I drove to Healthrow or by Tube I often seen golf courses beside the track are they any good? Got a Taiwan fren told me he always played along the M1 .....

Bring lotsa thermal wear during golf.. When the wind blows, hardest nuts can shrink too..

Many courses do not like single player but still possible.. Tried to book Sunningdale but the receptionist was absolutely obnoxious...

Lastly, maybe you could use this as rough guide on the courses and ratings..

You reckon golf courses will be open around 26 Dec - 2 Jan? Coz I search online, St Andrews are close during that period

Hi Randall, dont mean to be a wet blanket, but that period is not good for golf, esp if you are going to Scotland or northern England. High chance of snow.

but to answer ur question, i know that most courses will still be open and there will be discounted winter green fees. However, playing conditions will likely be poor...remember to buy winter golf gloves and maybe winter tees (cos the ground might be frozen and the normal tees can't poke through)

u'll have a better chance of having a nice game if u travel down south eg to Brighton
