Trying to doze off to sleep by watching the Open since I got an early morning tee time tomorrow, but watching Tiger is bad for insomnia!

He has played a patient and careful round, similar to day 1. His only blemish was that bogey in that par 5 hole 11, where his iron off the tee found the right rough, and from there the rough grabbed the club and he hooked it out to the left rough.

Making uneventful pars for most of the rest until hole 18. I thought he was too conservative with his tee shot, choosing an iron that left a long 160 something yard approach iirc, whereas Garcia chose driver and only had 100 yard or less left; Tiger finding the bunker as a result while Garcia is on the green. Tiger's main strategy was avoiding bunkers at all cost, so this did not look good.

But he promptly holed it for a birdie when I least expected it. Garcia in comparison still 2-putted for par.

Now to grab whatever sleep I can before my round tomorrow morning. Puasa month is yielding some good green fee offers.

Tiger perfectly poised. Commiserations to Mardan. A true blue Singaporean sportsman who will always have my respect.

Like to share rule of the day in open championship yesterday;

Ruling of the Day — Casual Water in Bunkers

20 July 2012 19:27 GMT

The second day’s play of the 141st Open Championship saw several players have difficulties with casual water and in particular, casual water in bunkers.

A player is entitled to free relief from casual water in a bunker if his ball lies in the casual water, his intended stance is in the casual water or his intended swing is interfered with by the casual water.

On Friday, both Keegan Bradley and Rory McIlroy had to consider their options for relief from casual water when they found the sand on the 15th and 17th holes respectively.

In taking free relief, the “nearest point of relief” must be in the bunker and the ball must be dropped in the bunker, within one club-length of this nearest point of relief.

If complete relief is impossible, a player is entitled to take “maximum available relief” in the bunker and drop the ball as near as possible to that point.

Alternatively, under penalty of one stroke, a player may drop out of the bunker keeping the point where the ball lay directly in line with the hole.

McIlroy chose to take free relief within the fairway bunker at the 17th and dropped the ball within a club-length of the nearest point of relief before playing out and then onto the green.

However, Bradley chose to play his ball as it lay in the greenside bunker at the 15th hole, despite the interference from the casual water. Although a ball may lie in casual water, a player does not have to take relief from casual water in a bunker and may instead elect to play the ball as it lies.

Bradley may have decided to do this for a number of reasons. As the sand was damp, the ball may have plugged in the sand when dropped or the dropping area may have been close to the face or edge of the bunker leaving the player with a much more difficult stroke. Consequently, choosing not to take relief and play the ball from its original lie can be the best option in these circumstances.

Like to share ruling of the day on the 1st day of the Open Championship

Ruling of the Day — Unplayable Ball

19 July 2012 20:17 GMT

During the first round of the 141st Open Championship, Phil Mickelson had to employ one of the most frequently used Rules in the game of golf. Playing the 8th hole, Mickelson found the deep bunker on the left of the fairway with his tee shot. His ball came to rest near the edge of the bunker, leaving him with a difficult shot over the steep bunker face.

Due to the angle of the shot, the ball failed to clear the long grass at the top of the bunker. After a short ball search to locate the ball, it was found buried deep in the rough. Mickelson decided to proceed under the unplayable ball Rule – Rule 28.

Under this Rule, the player has three options for relief, each incurring a penalty of one stroke. The player can choose to proceed under the stroke and distance option by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original was last played from (Rule 28a). In Mickelson’s case, this would have involved him dropping the ball back in the bunker and attempting the same shot again.

Alternatively, Mickelson could have dropped a ball within two club-lengths of where the ball lay but no nearer the hole (Rule 28c). For Mickelson, this option would have involved dropping the ball into further long grass, potentially leaving him with a similar difficult lie in the rough.

Instead, Mickelson decided to proceed under Rule 28b. This option permits the player to drop a ball behind the point where it lay, keeping that point between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far back the ball may be dropped. This decision afforded Mickelson the best outcome and allowed him to drop the ball behind the bunker and onto the fairway under penalty of one stroke.

Mickelson was not alone in utilising this Rule. In total, Rule 28 was used 9 times in Round 1 of the Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

info just in...MM got DQ because he failed to check the score that his marker Brad Kennedy have made. its no excuse although they were one of the last flights in and it has been a long and tiring day..

its a shame cos he played his hearts out for a 72 but 2 mistakes by his marker and he failed to check and signed the card cost him a DQ, thats the rule of golf.

hope it helps those who are seeking clarifications.

PS look out for Brandt Snedeker iron shafts....

That's a cruel way of ending the tournament for Mardan and understandably that's the rule. Like some other top pros, hope he learn something out of this mistake and come back stronger. But would he had made the cut for Day 3, had he not got DQed? I checked the official website leaderboard and found that his score had been completely erased!

Hard to say, because when you are in the green and after working this hard to get there and giving what you have then things just doesn't come your way. There isnt really anything you can want more than just sign the damn score card and get the hell out of there!

We have to be mindful, he is also fasting and this is a additional factor and pretty big one as well. Hope he will come back stronger next year.
