I heard many reports about TS and some of the other Turf City golf coaches.

Many comments about the coaches at TC were from SPGA coaches, but a few were USGTF cert ones also. And not all of it was based on just dissin' their biz competition.

Just ask around, especially at Green Fairways and Executive GC, and you will find out.

Do research BEFORE paying for lessons.

Also, I agree a student will get out of a lesson only what they put into it through practicing what the coaches teach them.

My only advice is to try to find a coach about the same physical build as you who is a good golfer. It's more likely you can master his or her style of swing than trying to emulate a coach who is taller/shorter or built differently in terms of body mass than you.

At least it works for me--usually.

So I stirred the hornet's nest Very Happy But let me summarise:

1. I'm not making a sweeping statement. Good local teachers are few and far between if they exist at all.
2. For learners who have benefitted tremendously from local teachers, good on you. But you are the lucky minority, I maintain.
3. The Internet (which is free) can be a better option to learn.

The Internet (which is free) can be a better option to learn.

I do not think so. I watch and watch the tips and still cannot execute them. It takes some eyes to see what went wrong and prescribe drills to follow.

If it is that simple, some computer expect would have modeled and cgi a perfect golf swing customised based on your attributes and you can watch and watch and watch.

But even TW didn't go that way.

A simple thing like how far back is my club during my upswing? I can't really tell. Many times i tried to do a 3/4 swing and ppl tell me that it is already full swing.

A human coach got his/her role in golfing.

While some are phoney duds, those who really know the mechanics of golf swing in most cases will try to relieve you of as much $$$ before imparting little or no knowledge at all. I'm terribly disgusted with this lack of professional ethics among them. So, little wonder most if not all successful golfers in Sg, pro and amateurs, eventually have angmo coaches.

I made the mistake of taking my first few lessons from Mr K (a malay still teaching in Changi NS club I think) many, many years ago. With the modern Internet, no one should suffer the same as me. Another bad thing I observed is driving ranges here have notices forbidding 'outsiders' teaching there. Although I'm unsure if this can be legally enforced, I find it an exercise to monopolise and force people wanting to learn golf to be rip-off by those unethical teaching 'pros'.

If you want to play golf well, my advice is to seek out an ethical teacher, someone who place integrity and honour before $$$, and of course they must not be duds. Most likely to be angmos, but still have to be careful as there as duds that I have seen.

I play off hdcp24 and like most 24s, I ocassionally do high 80s. If there are teaching pros who want to challenge my conviction or what I've said, I'm willing to play a betted match off blue tees on any golf course with you as long as I get my 24 stroke advantage. Black tees are off because some courses require a 200m+ carry which I can't do consistently.

That's all folks and I believe I'm going to be very unpopular here Very Happy

I think that a bad apple does not mean the entire apple tree is bad.

I have also heard of bad foreign coaches and good local coaches. I have heard of a case where a foriegn coach asked a 14 year old boy, when he came on time for his lesson, to wait for him for 3 hours so that he could coach his star student from Singapore Sports School. After 3.5 hours of coaching his star student, he merely spent 45 mins with this 14 year old kid before telling him he had to go off.

Now tell me, is that your version of a good coach??

Ahhh... thought you started playing in 1993 (which, coincidentally, is about the same time I started). Anyway, you didn't stir any hornet's nest. This is a public forum for public debate. You are entitled to your opinion and you have basis for your views.

I guess we all have differing thoughts on how golf coaching should be imparted. Unfortunately, I've heard both sides. Some preach the wonders of foreign coaches, other praise the localized approach. Whichever the case, I think that what is important is to find a coach which suits you, regardless of whether he/she is local or foreign. Also, practice practice practice. A coach can only do so much. The rest is up to the student.

My 2 cents Smile

I do not have a coach but saw a coach having lesson with a boy in greens fairways. I was just there having a drink and looking at ppl practising. This particular coach will use a video to record the boy's swing and show it to the boy and prescribe the remedy to him. After that, the boy starting practising on what the coach says. The coach then took out a cigarette and starting smoking while looking at his notebook. He did not even bother to check if the boy is doing correctly.

Do you think this is a good coach??

btw, he is an angmoh...

Negative Thoughts (ie. Don't think these local coaches can teach me!!!)
==> Bad Feelings (ie. This doesn't seem right! I don't think he's teaching the correct thing)
====> Your Action (ie. WTF.. I better off doing my old swing, or watch videos)

in the end? BAD RESULTS. and then get mad...

Instead of blaming coaches all the time, Why not question yourself?

- is it because you are always late for lessons, that's why he don't bother?
- is it because you are stubborn, the swing is not drilling into you?
- Is it because you are not getting the distance you want instantly with the new swing, you went back to the old habits? .............

I think you have got it all wrong young man. My colleauge David Ng is a local pro and he is a great coach. He took the time to learn how to be a better coach as his training with the SPGA was nil. He became a Gary Edwin instructor and knows his stuff. Khalid is another. As for the internet, good luck with that. Is that where you got the tip about the straight left arm form takeaway to delivery http://www.golfrepublic.org/tips-tricks-f12/golf-injury-t1498.htm#30600
Cause that aint exactly true.

as for no coaching at the range, the local school did pay a high rent (among other club requirements such a minimum number of coaches and attractive packages, required availability of coaches at certain timings etc) to teach there...therefore not fair for other coach to teach at no setup cost and zero operating cost. Its not the restriction on the student but rather the coach. This is not unethical golf coaching, this is normal business practice (for all types of business)

BF/husbands TRYING to teach their GF/Wife is OK......often to the bemusement of others. (often i overheard 'dont follow his way lar!!!!...its all wrong!!!!!' when another lady nearby try to follow what i try to teach my wife. dont know cry or laugh.... Laughing

some ppl like kindergarten style teaching (simple instructions with few critical analysis and assessment) , some like uni style teaching (theory, exact detailed instructions, very harsh and honest assessment). Me i prefer the Bubba Watson way.....and having fun doing it.

Will only get a coach (besides the beginners lessons just to get the PC) the day my wife plays better than me Very Happy (she has been letting on that i am all wrong and she never listen to my "training" instructions)

[/left]I hate to be honest with my first post here. My perceptions of local teaching 'pros' here in Sg is really low, particularly the malay and chinese ones. Those who are going to shell out $K to learn from them, good luck.

That's all folks and I believe I'm going to be very unpopular here Very Happy

what is ur point, dude?

Just a wild thought. Wild thought only ok Very Happy If we have a game together, what hdcp will you be playing off? I read you consistently score in the 80s. Maybe I have 10 shots advantage?? Very Happy I hdcp is 24 and got card to prove. Very Happy
