Putter Recommendation

Oh yea. Mallet putters are good. Especially the zen ones. For a 20 something hcp, have seen my putts go down to a personal best of 32 putts. Used to game a blade. It's so difficult to control. As bm correctly mentioned, there is this twisting motion that screws ur putts.

Sigh..... Now back to 38 due to lack of practise.

I think the part on blade putter may not be correct... it says blade putter is face balance but from what I have, it is definitely not...

Blade should be toe balance

Blade should be toe balance

So far i have only seen a Hiro blade putter which is face balance.

check out andrew's golf long neck SC newport. its also face balance.

its not difficult to make a blade FB if you can shift the hosel from the heel and have the right length and angle for the hosel.

Interesting article...i didn't realise that for a straight and through putting stroke, mallet is best.. how about centre-shafted putters? is that better for an in-to-out or straight and through stroke?

anyway, it's good info to have cause those bastards in panwest and golf house sometimes aim this gigantic magnet at my belt and pull me in, hypnotise me and i end up buying the wrong equipment......and ladies clothing in XL size....

also, any recommendations for putters that can withstand kryptonite?????

@ Begbie and Nientsu, coming straight from the horses' mouth, both of you are living validations of the benefits of a mallet putter, especially of the ZEN variety.

I can't say the same since it's been donkey years since I've gamed a mallet putter, and that was when mallet putters were still made from just one block of metal, rather than the multi-material, multi-construction mallet wondersticks of today.

My eye just prefers the look of the anser type putter. That design is also easier to fit in the golf bag without the huge protrusion from the side of the bag, especially with the putter cover on.

Someone asked earlier about the downside of a mallet putter and the one thing that just popped into my head, besides the aforementioned massiveness of a mallet in the golf bag, is that the high MOI is a mallet's Achilles heel as much as its strength.

Mallets lack feedback on where you have struck the putter on the face (feel is another matter altogether), and because it is like one massive sweetspot, mallets make you putt better but it doesn't necessarily make you a better putter.

Thanks bird man I'm glad you mentioned downside. Actually I am looking for more feedback and more feel judging distance. Have less problem keeping putt on line. Current old school blade putter i use is a bit light but given what you said I might stick with looking at blades. I like what you said about better putting vs being a better putter.

Anybody tried the odyssey black series? Got good reviews on golf digest hot list.

I have the first generation Black Series #2. The 2nd generation if I'm not mistaken, has the hitting area etched out on the face versus the fully flat face in my gen one. Supposedly there's an insert behind the face. I'm thinking of letting mine go even though it used to be my favourite.

But if you're considering the current black series, then you owe it to yourself first to try a ZEN putter from BFG. They're both around the same price, the difference is, your ZEN is put together according to how you putt and setup. The fitting and putting advice is all part of the price.

Now you know why I'm thinking of letting my Black Series go. There are many many converts here. I was a skeptic myself before converting. Now I don't have 4 wives, I'm happy with one.

Don't take my word for it, just set up an appointment with BFG, go there look look see see touch touch, no problem, no obligation. Many GRians there daily who just go there to talk rocks, so just intro yourself. The one who doesn't smile is Eric, he's the fitting guru you want to answer all your question on what type of putter to fit to you.

Yeah my friend has a zen putter from bfg. He swears by it and I tried a few putts with it - felt pretty good. I heard that ping does putter fittings too? Do other brands of putters do fittings or only zen at bfg?

They've got anser to mallets with all types of different necks for you to try out. If your friend's already felt good and it wasn't custom fit to you, imagine how good it'll be once you get your own custom fit one.

I'm not sure how much of a custom fitting PING does, I haven't tried it myself.

There's also Edel putters here that has a very comprehensive fitting too. Wilkang, one of the mods, is gaming one. His is the infamous NIL engraved putter. Edel is under Wizgolf.
