Putter Recommendation

Hi Guys,

Been trying to change my putter to those with a bigger club head.

Considering the Odessey White Ice V-line (2-ball). Very stable on the swing and the feel is good.

Are there any other recommendations that is around that price range that can be considered as well?

Have you tried Yes! Putters? They have an amazing roll... and I think PW sells them for 50% off now given that Yes! has gone (or is in the process of going) the way of the dodo.

Or, you can sample the poison with a Zen putter

in the not so distant future...i am pretty sure that we will still see the C-groove in production for another brand.

the putter brand may be in chapter 7 but the technology is not. i am sure Mr Hurrion has done the necessary.

If the company goes on sale, doesnt that mean whoever that buys over automatic have the rights to the design?

Design and Technology patent are different. Company structure also differs. Trademark, copyright and patent are all different.

for example, all copyrights for Superman still belongs to the family of the original artist, Jerry Siegel. even when records has it that it has been signed away to DC comics for $130.

worse still, many people think Warner has the rights and have been paying them rights to use for the longest time.

I tend to exert too much strength for my shots... Is there something that I need to look out for while choosing the putter?

Heavier head should be better and allows for a more stable putt?

bro.............seems more like technique issue

and a heavier head will be harder to control since u are already exerting too much strength?

Actually I am having some problems doing the "tick tock" motion on my current putter. Thought heavier head will make the tick tock motion more stable and smooth.

logically, yes, a heavier head should be promoting a more stable swing path...

but but but.... many other factors as well...

A heavier head does promote a more stable smooth stroke, forcing you to use the larger muscles to putt rather than the twitchy muscles of the wrist and hands. I do find that there are other issues with touch, in that fast greens, I sure die from the lack of feel and control. But it does work for those with handsy strokes, it just doesn't work for all. Or there would be more widespread use of it for pros with putting issues on tour.

But that's just my view.

To put it simply from a personal pt of view.

A lighter putter (in my case, a blade) - inconsistent stroke path for me.

Heavier putter (half mallet) - much smoother stroke path with better follow thru.

Different strokes for different folks.

Putter is very personal one. So onwards and all the best with your exploration.

Piero, Asahi is right on the personal note. That's just on the equipment front.

Then there is fitting, which after having gone through it, I cannot over emphasise how much of a difference it makes to aid your mechanics and confidence, because you know the utmost has been done to get your putter fit to you, any other problem has to be your stroke and you.

Besides the loft, lie, and length adjustments, there is the type of head (mallet or blade) that suits your stroke. And also what type of alignment aid helps you best visually (sight dot, single, double, or three lines framing the ball). You'd be surprised how little it takes to be fit, a new putter can cost many times more. Getting fit is better than going from one putter to the next, and the next, and the next... you get the point I'm sure.

Your setup and stroke is also vital. Are you fastidiously consistent in your setup? Do you jab at the ball or smoothly stroke through? Do you hold the putter with a death grip or just barely hold on to it? One of the best putters in the game, Ben Crenshaw, just held the putter like it was tofu. Someone once tried to pull it out of his hands while putting, and it practically fell out of his hands, that's how soft he held it.

The final part of getting the ball in the hole has to do with the space between your head, it's mental. By that I mean think of Tiger Woods in his prime and how he drained every putt when he needed to. You can have the best everything in the world for a putter, but if you don't have the belief in yourself, it's not going in as often as you want it to.

Again, to put it simply on the mental aspect.

You must BELIEVE the putt will drop and 'will' the ball in.

Of course, get your breaks' reading right too. Dun take me wholesale; left to right break, you hit right to left and expect to 'will' the ball in hor.

Can leh, just counter with left to right spin lor.

BM, you forgot to add, 'tarik & screw' the ball for the added spin.

Then body english when the ball near the cup so it will drop in last minute from the side.

I used to jab the ball but the stroking has improved after purchasing a putting mat.

Basically putting a couple of times before I leave for work and before I sleep every day.

Currently using a blade from Odessey (quite old already), looking at those odessey 2ball putters seems to promote a smoother stroke when I tried it in the store but not sure if its mental....

What are some of the better putters in the market these days?

Putters are all about feel and stroke, I believe. It's hard to say what is a good putter since this is highly subjective and depends largely on the golfer. There are obviously some great putters out there (e.g. Zen, Scotty Cameron etc.) but whether they are great a golfer is uncertain. Some golfers play very well with a basic no-frills putter. Others play well with the top-of-the-line-diamond-studded-gold-tipped putters.

It all boils down to the golfer.

I would suggest that you visit a fitter first to have your stroke reviewed and analyzed. Thereafter, recommendations can be made for you. These recommendations are not solely about brand but more about the putter length, lie, loft, blade/mallet etc. With that in mind, you can narrow down your search for your better putter.

I was having the same dilema as you and personally own a blade now. works for me. My first putter was a mallet.. and it was a terrible experience for me so i never went back to mallet. But different people got different style.. I think putting is really mental, so if u feel confident with the 2ball, maybe u should get it..

I was never able to visualise how to putt with a mallet and i guess thats why i failed terribly at it.. With a blade, I'm more comfortable(or natural) with the setup and hence I think that's how I'm able to make more putts.

I think you need to have a standard routine when setting up for a putt before a fitter can actually help analyse for u. I do not have any routine so.... until now i dont know what lie/loft is better for me.. I just go for what i feel comfortable with.

For better putters out there, mostly its just branding (but for some branding = confidence too).. I personally like Odyssey (and i have seen many golfers putt well with the 2ball though i havent personally tried). If u wanna try blades maybe u can try Cleveland, TM ghost, Scotty, Zen, Odyssey and ping. These are the 'better' ones imo. Cleveland being the cheapest of the range

cleveland classic putter is good and cheap. nice soft feeling for a cast steel putter. rolls OK

i have a small suggestion that you might wanna consider...

I was looking thru this forum and I saw Wizgolf is coming up a putting workshop in NSRCC, "Putting with SAM and Brett"..
I know Brett is the teaching pro in NSRCC, and he will be sharing his knowledge about putting with participant, but as for Sam..err..err...i'm not too sure....haha !!

You might wanna consider that and ask lots of questions before heading to retail outlet..just my view...haha !!
