A short cut to hitting your irons Empty
PostSubject: A short cut to hitting your irons   A short cut to hitting your irons I_icon_minitimeSun Dec 12, 2010 5:56 pm

i've been having problems hitting my 5i & 6i, heavily slicing my irons....it got so bad, i wanted to replace them with a 5H and 6H....however, i recently learnt something at the driving range this week that I wanted to share....it's nothing earth shattering but it helped me become a little more consistent:
1. at address, preset your hands and club to the position that you wish to impact the ball
2. it's hard to describe but it almost looks like phil mickelson's putting stroke at address with a forward press
3. for me it means my hands are set ahead of the clubface with the club shaft leaning from front to back

My other swing thoughts are:
4. focus on hitting down on the ball
5. pause at the top of your backswing (this is probably the most important)
6. for a more accurate shot, keep your left leg stable (i.e. do not move your left knee to the right)

what this hopefully results in is that when you swing down, it will return to your preset position at the point of impact............this works for me cause i tend to play my irons off my back foot instead of the more conventional middle of the stance for short irons and off the front foot for longer irons

anyway, thought i would share this on a very lazy sunday evening......i will get a chance to test this on the course tomm and we'll see whether this is just another driving range pro, fairway hacker thingamajig.........

What you have mention is something part of the R.S.S..... setting up the shots on impact position. I also do that but mine not fully R.S.S. Sort of like a hybrid. Anyway, make sure when you set up, its the body posture that addressed at impact position instead of just the hands.... for further improvement and instruction, please look for the "right sided coach" he is on the forum too.

i guess it's true when they say that a thousand monkeys with a thousand typewriters given enough time would stumble upon the greatest works in literature.....similar to how i've stumbled upon an established swing theory....and just when i was about to copyright it Very Happy
