PostSubject: make sense switching to A flex?   make sense switching to A flex? I_icon_minitimeSat Dec 04, 2010 3:12 pm

Of late, i have been hitting some SR flex with great results.
It was long and the feel was sweet.
Upon measurement, it was an "A" flex

Although on track man my reading for driver is 88-92MPH.
But I suspect my swing is much slower at the course.
Should I change to "A" flex?

Any advice? especially those who had played with me.

Hi Bro (aka #2), I think you should. Stick to the measurement and give yourself a decent duration to size up the suitability.

Flex ratings have never been standard in the first place. One brand's "SR" can be another brand's "A" as you've found out.

To boost golfers' egos, many (....actually almost all Razz) golf club manufacturers label their shafts much stiffer than they really are. If they label true flexes, nobody would buy their drivers! Razz

Shaft manufacturers tend to be a little more honest with their flex ratings.

A seasoned clubmaker once told me, the best thing to do, is to bring down our favourite club and let the clubmaker assess the true specs before any change. That'll save us time, money and a lot of frustration in the long run. Find a clubmaker you can trust and listen to his recommendations, even if it is a "A" flex. Cool

Also, be realistic in clubfitting as it may take a few sessions to fine-tune the equipment. No different from making a few trips down at different stages for the tailor to fit our clothes nicely. Smile

tailor fit clothes will fit if you don't put on or lose weight. people change all the time so there is no definite pattern. the better you get, the more eccentric you become. thats a fact of life - in golf, in putting and also in most part of social behaviour.

in SBH case, he seeks to change all the time, but thats him. the day he stop changing, he will not enjoy golf as much.

scientifically, if you have an XXS shaft and a ladies flex shaft that are both the same weight, both should go the same distance. the only variance in this case is timing. hence its still possible that some golfers prefer to take it back shorter and need the extra flex to give them the "whip" or "load" as some call it.

i think it makes sense to just stick to what u are using. u r playing great. who cares what is printed on the shaft, if it works for u, it works for u.

I am surprise to hear that.

I have concluded my flex is SR.
However, The "A" seems to do wonders.
I shall experiment with it one last time for a few months.
I think at the end of the day, the comfort of dispersion will call the shot.

Yeap, one of the warren pros that was teaching last time showed me.... its all about getting the right timing... he could hit his 6 iron 180-190m, then he took a young gals club in graphite, super whippy, after a few practise swing, he hit it to the same distance and position too.

I also witness another time with one of my customer's engineer. I borrowed a set for him, driver in Jap Regular super seasoned flex and irons is S300......after like a few holes, he was bombing the driver 270m-280m and his irons was dead straight and long...... I ask him how he do it, he told me, its all about timing... so if the whole set is fitted for you, there will be one less thing to worry about in a game. he is a scartch golfer from UK.... first outing at warren, and he hit 1 over. His first 3 holes was 4 over. Smile

you can't defy physics...

but feel is still a influence, not major but an influence. Unlike a robot, humans rely on feel to give them familiarity and that whys when one use a softer or stiffer shaft, he or she needs to change their biological sense to time the release.

Basically I'm a feel/ tempo player.
So is it right I will do better with a whippier shaft?
From experiment I seem to do well with softer flex.
It was the media that give me the impression stiffer shaft is right for me.
For info, I am not that egoistic.......

still physics Colin...

the photo must be taken sometime back since President Ong passed away in 2002.

meanwhile our body age, our eyesight play tricks, you lose flexibility, our golf equipment expenses increases and you have got to realise by now that its never going to be the same.

you may slow down the tide of change if you:

1. go to the gymn
2. get better technically and mentally
3. play from a shorter tee box

For me it's more of a mental...
Have never been able to concentrate unless there is heavy betting ROFL just joking
Has improved ever since I got feedback from my video posting.
Realize I was too handsy and not using core muscle.
Now the change is bearing fruite.
Played a 1 over at Ria Bintan forest nine but blow up the second nine.
Your putting tips helps with slight modification with my own natural tendency.
