wisdom of buying a new set or irons

I have picked up golf for about a month and enjoying every lesson.

At present I am using a set of very old but usable steel irons. I am thinking of getting a set of graphite which should be lighter to play and to carry on the course.

I found that the irons come in a set 7 or more irons, sometimes including the pitching and sand wedge. But at my level I would probably need only the NO. 7 and 9 irons. As for the pitching and sand wedge and the woods I could buy the brand that I find most comfortable, not necessary from the same brand as the irons.

I dont know of any shop selling loose irons.

Should I continue to use the steel unti such a time I am more proficient to buy a new set of graphite.

Let me share fm one seasoned beginner to another.
If you are saying that your current set if VERY old, then I think you should get a decent set....coz the new set has technology advancement to make golf alittle easier or satisfying.

As for graphite or steel, its up to individual....I am getting older (just like all of us) but however I realize that I am better-er with steel shaft.

My suggestion....don need to get brand new, but get a 2nd hand with maybe 3 years old technology is good enough.

I am still using the set I gotten 4 years ago....

ok this might be different for each individual.
I've been using R7 CGB Max iron with steel shaft for 3 years (2007).
I've just switch over to Mizuno MP 68 blade steel shaft regular.

I took me about 500 balls to hit on the range (over 3 nights) and I'm now hitting it quite ok (could be better). CGB Max is what I would think as a super game improvement iron and Mizuno MP 68 is supposed to be for low handicap player kind of club.

What I'm trying to say is that if you got the correct fundamental, switching to a new club does not really take that much effort. Sure you need to hit a couple of hundres ball to get used to the feel, but you will get a hang of it fairly quickly.

Another example is the pro who keep changing their iron everytime there is a new model. I don't think they need to relearn that much.

Or I might be talking rubbish, but that rubbish worked for my case at least. Happy swinging

there's always the second hand golf shop. Check them out. I believe creative joe has got some good deal or bob's place. or you can even wait for good deals from fellow GRians. Usually good stuff at reasonable price.

It appears to me that the technique is of paramount importance. I have used my friend's very expensive club but it makes no difference to my 12 years old club. It may therefore not so relevant for me to get another set of irons till I reach a certain level of proficiency. By then I have to decide whether to get a game performance or enhancement set.

Bro Goffy, though you had this reasoned out. But will recommend that you keep your eyes open and look out and more importantly try out some other clubs....while you still with your old faithful.

Technology does make a difference. I got a used set of G15 for my dad who is 70yrs old, and nowadays he attack the warren par 3s with much confidents cos he is hitting them with irons once again. He use to use at least a hybrid but now, he just need the 4 iron.

when the red indian is ready. the arrow will make a difference. But only when the red indian is ready, otherwise it makes little sense to invest.

But, as always, there are exceptions.

i previously had the supposedly easiest iron to use, Big Bertha 08.

Now in golf hibernation, using a $50 vintage blade set (at least 20yo) i bought from this forum (initially to buy for practice) but use it twice on the course already, if anything the short irons are more accurate.

The Indian plays a very important part. The best and easier iron set does not help if the swing is not stable, in my case is becomes worst cause sometimes with the BB08 irons i can hit a good shot with a lousy swing and i think "hey!! that a GOOD swing!!" and will try to repeat the bad swing again.

Still the arrow is important. Looking to buy a CB forged set, like the Callaway X-tour. i have the 6 iron and it feels like hitting the hybrid..easy..way easier than the blade 6 iron. Maybe the Nike 2011 combo

Bro Duval, I would certainly keep your tips in mind just as the tips of all the other very helpful golfers in ths forum. Golf is indeed very facinating. No two shots are exactly the same, there are many factors to consider. Other than our "feel" technology of the tools cannot be ignored. I would certainly visit DGman when I am ready for a customized set. I guess as we grow older we need all the help from a better arrow. Duffader's G15 is now within my sight. Tronos shows signs of waking up from his sieste. I just got up from mine. Started golf in my early 20s but found it easier to kick a bigger ball. I have not heard much about the Nike that Tronos mentioned. You have just given me another option to consider. Thanks folks.
