| Becareful for those who frequent Golf in Msia.. S'porean driver jailed and fined for bribing M'sian cop JOHOR BARU - A Singaporean businessman was fined RM15,000 (S$6,400) and sentenced to a day in jail by the Sessions Court here after he pleaded guilty to offering a bribe to a traffic policeman. Ong Peoy Kuan, 61, offered a RM100 (S$42) bribe to Kons Muhammad Hafiz Aziz near the Lima Kedai toll plaza at about 5pm on May 30 to not take action against him for exceeding the speed limit. Ong offered the bribe as Kons Muhammad Hafiz was about to issue a summons. The offence under Section 17 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 is punishable with up to 20 years' imprisonment or a fine of not less than five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher. In mitigation, Ong's lawyer G.K. Sritharan said the accused was a first-time offender and was suffering from kidney disease as well as diabetes. "He has deeply regretted his actions and has fully repented," he said. "He has saved the court's time and expenses by admitting to the charge." DPP Abdul Ghafar Abdul Latiff argued for the maximum sentence to be imposed, saying that offering a bribe to a civil servant was a very serious offence. Ong paid the fine. http://motoring.asiaone.com/Motoring/News/Story/A1Story20100819-232834.html | |

| It is a joke when the DPP says "offering a bribe to a civil servant was a very serious offence" so offering bribes to judges and ministers is not so serious!
what a joke! | |

| Guys, this advice was given to me by a lawyer friend. If you are stop for speeding, don't directly offer money to the %$$#$% cop. What you need to do is simple. Show your driving licence as request and then ask the cop nicely how you could have this speeding fine compound? The cop will show his hand. If he asked for money, just slip the money into your Passport next and past it to him. Hi Jason, is this ok? | |

I refused to pay him and he threaten me by saying, if I don't pay him now then I will have to pay the authority RM300 and now he is offering me a discount! WTF!!!

Well, just like in Indonesia, even you never break the law, they can 'create' something for you.

| This is true; offer and acceptance in general. I always let them ask me first for the amt and where to put the money to pass to them. - Tituman wrote:

There is a VIP sitting beside me at that time, he is the one tell me to ask for a summon instead. The VIP show some kind of a identity I think and straight away this "civil servent" without any question "open the road" in front for us to go. No money was involved in this case

| It is still different in Malaysia and Indonesia. When I am stop by "civil servant" for traffic issue .. Not a word need to be say .. roll down your car window and push the money to him and just drove off.
.. In Malaysia .. Do not even use the "word" money or "coffee money" .. This is what you do. Tell the "civil servant" that since you are from Singapore, You do not know where to pay the fine. Ask him " Is there any easy way for you to pay fine now ?" or "Can I pay my fine here ?".
If he agreed for your to pay the fine on the spot .. you can negot for the amount .. They are unable to say that you are trying to bribe them as you are just paying the fine on the spot ?
But, please do not ask for a receipt !!

| Bunch of bullshit. I just dislike these msian policemen hitting on us sg drivers. Still remember the other time I got stopped and the guy asked for "settlement" on the spot and I didn't have enough ringgit. I said I only have $50 sgd and he said ok. I said no way, market is only $50 ringgit so he must give me back $50 ringgit change and he said ok. Then I ask him if got anymore roadblock in front on way to KL, he said oh one more. So I told him keep the $50 ringgit but ask his ferns in front don't bother to stop me cos I already paid toll. I drove to KL smoothly. - Roystonnn wrote:

Haaa that is funny but I would suggest that you do not get up set with this. This is not only happened in Mly, just because you do not see it happened in Singapore. There are still many counties in Far East have the same situation .. That's a saying " In Rome, just do what the Romese does " .... It is just a different culture in different countries. Bro

| To avoid this issue, when traveling to malaysia, I have tried taking private mini bus charters instead. However, it looks like the police hits on malaysians as well. There was one incident where one of our charters were stopped at a road block at around midday and they charged my driver for not being registered to the vehicle he was driving. (theres some rule in malaysia which requires the driver to be registered to the charter vehicle)
The malay driver had no choice but to pay up. For my friends, they kept mum throughout the whole process so as not to get involved. Apparently, this can be quite a frequent thing.
