Blades vs Cavity Backs - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Blades vs Cavity Backs   Blades vs Cavity Backs - Page 2 I_icon_minitimeTue Jun 08, 2010 2:20 pm

Let's say my objective on the range is to become a better ballstriker, then training with a blade will force me to be more precise. There is a caveat here, since sound mechanics through coaching is a much better idea.

On the course, my objective is to score low, using blades when I'm not already striking the ball pure would just hurt my scoring. There are more differences between a blade and cavity back than just feedback. There is just too much talk about getting better feedback from blades and how there's nothing in the world like the buttery smooth feeling of puring a blade.

Blades have a higher CG than cavity backs, it takes more speed and the correct angle of attack to launch a blade the optimum height and distance. The average LPGA player has more swing speed than most male amateurs, how many do you see using blades? With 160 metres left to the pin on a downhill lie to an elevated green, Give me a cavity back please!

The relative instability of a blade versus a cavity back is another factor, it leads to a higher dispersion rate. Ball below or above my feet, a blade will just exacerbate the resulting fade or draw of such lies.

So how am I to achieve my objective of scoring low with a set of blades on the course when I'm not already striping them?

Radical suggestion...to increase feedback, maybe should try hand massage and medicure....the roughness of our palms sometimes prohibits the feel to translate to our senses.....

Chim...
Dunno what phrases like "correct angle of attack to launch a blade the optimum height and distance" mean
or
What is optimum height and distance and how to tell wtf the angle of attack/launch is?
and
I cannot tell what is "buttery smooth feeling of puring a blade" means either.

All I know is that off centre and centre hits on my blades can be as much as 2 club length difference, compared to my other set. If you have enough skill you can "stripe/shape/score" with either.

Hit whatever pleases your eye.. if at address, I don't like the shape of the club I'm seeing, then less confidence usually equals to crappy results. albino

Hahaha.... The Secret Squirrel pan jee sek lo fu.

He who has digested Homer Kelly's Golfing Machine as if it were a book of nursery rhymes claims ignorance.

Excuse me.... ahem.... Digested, absorbed and understood, discarded, then with a clear mind, plays Zen golf.

Cool!!!

yup.i agree.cavity back are good for starters.... but a swap to blades are advisable when an ideal & proper swing has been shaped & cultivated..blades forces/demands you to hit a perfect shot everytime...a miss hit will be obvious..more focus needed.i like blades..improves my swing.would recommend to those who like challenges. Very Happy

Not a sound recommendation at all ! You mean using cavity back irons need less focus and using blades will improve your swing ???

I do believe in free speech but In this forum there are many beginners and enthusiast here, so a little more care is needed before pouring out your "poison"(meaning of Poison - good stuffs or equipement)

Peace! no malice or "suan" intended.....

p.s local top Pro Lam Chee Beng uses a cavity back irons too! Many top US and European players uses Ap 2 and TM R9 tp, all are cavity back irons too. They
did not change to blades to improve their swing or increase focus....

haha..apologies..should have been clearer in my opinions... not saying that cavity backs are totally for beginners..pros do use it too.. it is much easier to get the ball up for those whose just started..and yes it too needs focus ..if not how to hit the ball properly right? anyways theres no restrictions if anyone wants to get their hands on blades..by all means.. challenge yourself.. but dont challenge others...hahaha.

ok.personally i feel that ived improve my game when i swap to blades(a few of my kakis also)...it requires me too hit it on the sweetspot to get the ideal distance and trajectory..if not its just sloppy shot..and also forces myself to practice even more....just sharing my experience here..might not be applicable to everyone...but you can try though..thanks guys for your feedbacks...paiseh* for any offensive or unacceptable views.cheers.

Guys, the choice of blade vs cavity back is not cut and dried. You go with what works for you. I typically play blades as I prefer clubs with little or no offset and a thin topline. I don't have a problem of getting the ball up in the air, yet given a choice, I have no issues playing a set of Mizuno MP62, or the Nike VR Cavity/Combo as they feel good, are well balanced, and have a thin top line with little offset.

Just because one is a beginner does not mean that he/she should use cavity backs. As much as club forgiveness is important, a beginner who is committed to develop good ball striking skills and is prepared to invest time and effort into developing a mechanically sound and consistent swing will have no issues playing blades well in a matter of months. On the other hand, I have seen mid-handicappers playing beginner iron sets with a funky swing and wondering why they cannot improve - the same guys who have gotten away thus far using a chipper.

I also have a Ping PAL4 and a Zing putter, both beryllium copper, from my dad, still with the stickers from Isetan from 25 years ago, practically brand new Smile Won't be using them any time soon, and never used them at all.

not less assistance, just less offset.

you guys keep thinking that blade irons are hard to hit. I'm telling you that it's not true. Build a sound swing and you can hit with anything. If you're playing golf with the mentality of trying to play well while getting away with a swing that looks like Charles Barkley's, you're deceiving yourself.
