1. chemical on the golf course 2. golfer's sweat 3. salt content in the air 4. playing in humid conditions such as ours 5. not allowing the shafts to air (after a rainy day and in a stuffy bag).
a "pitted' shaft is not likely to break easily, even if you have Alvin7379 clubhead speed. so its not a big worry but if you are aesthetically-motivated, you may not want to see imperfection. also for steel shaft, it will not changed its properties (like flex and torque). But it may get a kink or bend, thats the time you have to change the shaft for sure.
to upkeep your steel shaft, you can use a steel wool or very fine sand paper to take out the pitted spots, then make sure you oil regularly (after every few rounds) to ensure that you keep the corrosion under control. the recommended "oil" to use are any oil including cooking oil, motor oil, WD 40 and silicon lubricant.
unknown to many, the actual rusting starts from the inside of the shaft, but its not something that you get to see.
Hope its useful info......DGman If there is rust on your shaft exterior, rust can also form inside the shaft too, right? I tried to spray WD-40 inside the shaft through the rubber grip, but there is a tape seal inside the shaft, which I was told the tape was to prevent dirt from entering into the shaft. Should I break a hole inside the tape seal and spray the WD-40?

| After spraying WD 40 into the steel shafts, my grips deteriorated and became soft as though in process of "melting". I think it was due to reaction with the WD 40. I switched to using Fluid Film and noted there wasn't any adverse reaction. So do be careful what you use. | |

But according to DG, rust does form inside the steel shaft too.

| Try looking for it at DIY or hardware shops. It is in spray cans just like WD 40 though I have not come across any in smaller cans like WD 40 | |

But according to DG, rust does form inside the steel shaft too. Which is why the hole in your grip is sealed up in the first place, to prevent dirt and moisture from getting inside your shafts and forming rust. Just like you were told.

Cyclists stay away from WD40, ironically they say that indirectly, it actually causes rust in the long run. Here's a post from a DIY site: "When it dries it leaves a varnish that attracts moisture in the air. That is what leads to rust. I have seen guns sprayed with WD-40 then stored away for a year or so that were one solid mass of rust, completely ruined. It does displace moisture until it dries out. "
