Rust on Shaft - how to take off Empty

Quite remarkable that such amount of rust has settled on the shaft (as seen on pics), even if you manage to remove them, it'll be a matter of time that rust will re-visit again ~ defintely time for a shaft change......

You can try some Autosol with green wool, but that's only a temp fix........

the easiest way is to use your kitchen aluminium foil.
tear off a piece, fold it a few folds , wrap round the shaft and
rub the rust off.

Rust on Shaft - how to take off IMG_2312_zpsf6759e4c

Can apply rust converter think can buy from DIY r hardware shops easily.
Simply brush or spray it on rusted area and within seconds, the rust is converted to a strong stable bluish black compound protecting the metal from further rusting. Newly converted surface serve as an excellent primer coat for application of new coats of paint. Non-acidic formula makes it safe to use. Some are infact waterbased.

PostSubject: Re: Rust on Shaft - how to take off   Rust on Shaft - how to take off I_icon_minitimeSun Jun 30, 2013 10:47 pm

So sad.. to think of changing the shaft
i got the rust without bringing the club to the course.... been to the range once or twice before the beginning ...
(i have brought it to course by now)

the rust converter sounds magical but i do not know if t is advisable in our application

I will try the aluminium foil and the autosol.

But where do you get autosol and Green wool (i do not know what it is if it is not wool in green..) pls ??

Thks bros for your help

do you have any explanation on the phenomenon ?
cause the other nike wedge is stored a the same place but got nothing so far...

I think you can get the autosol and the green wool(those that are used for washing plates etc) from NTUC etc...

it could have come in contact with water when u use it at the range. happen to my clubs when there is heavy rain at the range, although they are not directly under the rain, they still got wet. I did not realise that until i saw the rust wekks later

I would hv thought the chrome plating on the shafts was too thin or didn't adhere to the base metal.. sometimes it could also be the base metal wasn't properly treated/ primed for the plating and may already hv rusted prior to the plating

Click on the link below for green wool scouring pad

http://www.cleansweepsupply.com/pages/item-mmm86.html

Both green wool & Autosol can be found in NTUC and most sundry outlets.

Rust sets in as a result of corrosion which indirectly indicates the shaft's integrity ~ matter of time that it'll just collapse........

PostSubject: Re: Rust on Shaft - how to take off   Rust on Shaft - how to take off I_icon_minitimeMon Jul 01, 2013 11:06 am

go DIY store look for Fine Sandpaper, think 1000 or 2000 series...

then go buy some Singer oil or Baby oil....

rub the shaft with the oil n run the sandpaper over it....

since the sandpaper is fine, it will not take too much metal off the shaft....

my suggestion: after a rain-out day, take the bag out of the car n remove all clubs to air dry...u need to remove the moisture...

i dun let those club-cleaning ladies at the club to wash my clubs cos they may not dry them well after washing...

as long as u remove any moisture, u wont see rust....

Rust on Shaft - how to take off Empty
PostSubject: Re: Rust on Shaft - how to take off   Rust on Shaft - how to take off I_icon_minitimeMon Jul 01, 2013 11:22 am

I have done it for my pre-owned shafts before.

Spray on the shaft some silicone spray lub first and then use Scotch Brite (3M - extra HD or Heavy Duty) or fine sanding sponge (Daiso - hardware/tools dept) to clean up the rust spots.

It helps to clean up the additional rust on the 'bubbles' chrome area.

Then use rust treatment/convertor to brush/paint on the rust spots; leave it for about 30 mins and the spots will appear to be purple/black colour.

You can later use paint marker (Silver) to paitn on them if you want.

These are link to some of the products that I used :-

From the looks of the photos, the rust is quite bad; think it is better to change to a new one or pre-owned ones which is be cheaper and lesser work if you are not into DIY.

Clean the iron clubs and dry them after every range and game will helps to maintain them in good conditions.

PostSubject: Re: Rust on Shaft - how to take off   Rust on Shaft - how to take off I_icon_minitimeMon Jul 01, 2013 2:33 pm

Thanks guys, lots of idea ! iwill try tonight if i can find autosol in the NTUC near my place.

I keep at hand slinger and fatboy tricks in case autosol fails =p

I should pay attention a bit more to the shaft but its the only one having a rust problem :/

I think its time to pay my first visit to DGman this week end (not only for the wedge shaft possibility to change) .. =)

No worry.

But have to inform you can once you use scotch brite/green wool/fine sandpaper, etc, your shaft will change from chrome finishing to satin finishing.

Don't think it will affect your game in any way, my game is still as bad as ever after cleaning the rust.

You can say that again; cannot manage to get off the bad habits.

Swing is still inconsistent and always play from the wrong side (I am a left handed) Cool

If there is rust on your shaft exterior, rust can also form inside the shaft too, right?

I tried to spray WD-40 inside the shaft through the rubber grip, but there is a tape seal inside the shaft, which I was told the tape was to prevent dirt from entering into the shaft.

Should I break a hole inside the tape seal and spray the WD-40?
