Just brush it off... Maybe use a scouring pad and rub it off... Do you play often or where is clubs usually kept?

This is what I do if I find my steel shaft has rust or the correct term is called pitted. Take a piece of green wool, those for scrubbing pots and pans and rub it. Once the rust is off, I would use singer oil and put it on a cloth and rub it up and down a couple of times from top to bottom of the shaft, Job completed. Any other method of cleaning, please comtribute here.

My own take is... if you run your fingers along the shaft and you can actually feel the 'dent' on the shaft due to rust eating into the shaft... change the shaft.

Generally a golf swing is quite forceful and the defect on the shaft may cause premature fracture of the shaft (i.e. shaft breaking into 2)... quite dangerous to the people around you and yourself. Better not take the risk lah.

btw... I didn't really know that shaft will rust one!

corrosion affects the outer layer of the shaft and this is cause by....

1. chemical on the golf course
2. golfer's sweat
3. salt content in the air
4. playing in humid conditions such as ours
5. not allowing the shafts to air (after a rainy day and in a stuffy bag).

a "pitted' shaft is not likely to break easily, even if you have Alvin7379 clubhead speed. so its not a big worry but if you are aesthetically-motivated, you may not want to see imperfection. also for steel shaft, it will not changed its properties (like flex and torque). But it may get a kink or bend, thats the time you have to change the shaft for sure.

to upkeep your steel shaft, you can use a steel wool or very fine sand paper to take out the pitted spots, then make sure you oil regularly (after every few rounds) to ensure that you keep the corrosion under control. the recommended "oil" to use are any oil including cooking oil, motor oil, WD 40 and silicon lubricant.

unknown to many, the actual rusting starts from the inside of the shaft, but its not something that you get to see.

Eric... so should we also "oil" the clubhead after every round? How thick should the layer of oil be?
Is it like oiling a rifle in army?

Actually I didn't thought of it... until you mention it... I should be soaking my irons now....

I had a few of my steel shafts snap on impact years ago due to rust from the inside. Never really bothered about airing out my clubs after wet weather play, just kept them in the bag (which was vinyl in those days) and shoved them into the storeroom, erroneously thinking the clubs are steel and indestructible. They never got a chance to breathe and dry out. After several years of this, the clubs still looked fine on the outside, but were rusted enough to snap on impact, which I found usually happens at the hosel. Lesson learned.

when you change grip next, you can ask for the silicon coat treatment on the inside.

go to marine parade beach to accelerate the rusting process, if you want to do it at home you can take out the grips and pee into your irons....
