Wah... Penta more expensive than Pro Vs ah!!!!! affraid

Even if it's by a dollar, it says something about the confidence that TaylorMade has in this new product and its performance.

Between the two, would you guys pay the dollar more for the Penta?

You are welcome. Just let me know when.

Thought you tried the ball before cos you posted on how soft it was and how its cover not so durable. It is true, like the earlier ProVs, scuffs easily to show the khaki colour underneath. But at the price I got them, I'm not complaining .

no not tried it, but played with someone playing it. can see it was new when we started. by the 9th hole, it was pock marked alreay.. hehehe..

for the TA/TA2, i had same experience.. btw do you think the black max and TA is almost the same? would like to hear your views on the comparison.

anyway this is just for curiousity.. afterall, even if want to game these balls, they are no longer in production.

as a comparison, i found a Titleist Pro 100.. the wound ball type. it was soft.. but out of round after a few hits. curious the ball is slightly smaller than the ProV1.

i also found a balata once.. feels lke hitting a wooden cork!

Yeah, the ball looks like crap after two rounds. Hit trees and cart paths, worse still, terok looking after one round. Fit for water hole. But just love the way the ball seems to cling to the face of my driver on impact. Someone told me it's heavier too.

I played a TA2 I found long time ago, vaguely remember the cover to be more durable, but it didn't make much of an impression on me. Maybe I wasn't striking the ball good enough back then to feel the difference.

Not surprised the balata felt like a wooden cork, I think it's some kind of naturally occuring material.

The Pro 100 would go out of round after a few hits. It is after all just one continuous long rubber band wound round a core filled with paste. I used to cut them up as a kid, take one end of the rubber band and just watch the ball jiggle and unwind to it's core.

Very observant on the size Mizzy.

Not many people still remember that there were two sizes of golf balls once. The British size of 1.62 inches, and the American size of 1.68 inches. We now play just the American size. The British size of 1.62 is illegal because pros discovered the smaller ball played better in windy conditions giving an unfair advantage at tournaments like the British Open. Ironic considering that it is the birthplace of this beautiful game we play.

good info birdman. I remember reading about the 2 sizes and was wondering why now only 1 size.. so its illegal now.. hehe..

smaller ball easier to go in the hole when putting.. heavier also less affected by wind.. i like!

I seem to feel the TA balls are a little bit oily on the surface after it wears.. not the oily oily.. just feel like it melts a bit of oil off.. :affraid:

You got it Mizzy, your analysis damn fast man. Very Happy

Got curious about balata and this is what I found.

Also called Gutta Balata, it is a hard rubberlike material made by drying the milky juice produced principally by the bully tree (species Manilkara bidentata) of Guyana and the West Indies. The tree is tapped by cutting zigzag gashes in the bark and collecting the latex in cups, to be coagulated in trays. Like gutta-percha, balata is inelastic, tough, leathery, and water-resistant, and it softens when heated. It is often used as a substitute for the more expensive gutta-percha, chiefly in the manufacture of golf balls and machine belting.

Not that it means anything anymore. Don't think people even know what a gutta-percha or featherie was.

slick yes.. better description thanks.. hehe..

i find that some balls, the short game spin gets better after the cover wears a bit, the cover is less smooth, less shiny for some and more tacky in feeling.. maybe is psychological..

i like the feel after the ball wears a bit, even on the putter. i just keep using that 1 ball until i lose it or retire it after it cannot turn white after washing or starts to crack.

There is merit in what you say about there being more spin once the ball has seen some use. Some balls lose that slick feel after use making the surface grippier, can tell just by rubbing the thumb over the surface. Could make the ball cling to the clubface face a nano second longer.

Here's another bit of history linked to what you mention about cover wear. That's how the dimples on golf balls came to be. The old gutta percha balls were completely smooth, and bits used to fall off the more play the ball received. I'm sure like you, someone noticed that balls with small holes on the surface seemed to fly further and stay in the air longer. He probably wondered if it was psychological as well. More and more people must have noticed it, cos manufacturers started deliberately scoring the balls and selling them, cos they really were flying longer. And that was the humble beginning of the advanced aerodynamic science of dimples as we know it today.

yes, interesting history. the science behind it is still being studied now on dimple development. i remember there was some rumours out that titleist was going to put swirl marks on their balls after the V groove rules came out.. that was a hoax i think.

heck i was thinking of rubbing sandpaper on my new balls before putting them in play at one time!

i think a new dimple design might be around the corner, not a technical breakthrough, maybe be more a marketing gimmick, but i'd surely buy into it no doubt. geek

Sandpaper bro? Bit drastic right... ROFL

If you want then try with one first lor... see how the DIY turns out. But suggest you look for the finest grit you can find. The grade they use for pool cues. It feels almost smooth. That should be really gentle.

Haven't heard anything yet on any revolutionary new dimple design yet? Too busy to have put my ear to the ground. Lemme know if you do.

Mizzy, you mentioned swirl marks earlier, I found this on the net:

There was the Rifled Ball - a ball designed like the barrel of a gun – which according to adverts would fly like a bullet. It did, but only if you hit it 100% straight – otherwise it was off – spinning here there and everywhere.

I only wish that my golf balls to be more faithful and loyal to me........so many times, I gave them TLC, and what happen, within a game or 2, they just ran away....not even a word of 'bye bye'.........so many nites I suffer fm heartache and emotional stress.

BALL !!! BALL !! especially the new NXT Ball....WHY WHY!!!!!!!

I prefer balls that are loyal and faithful

I used e6 and changed to B330-RX. I feel good with B330-RX ball but cannot talk what is good about it since I am still not a good player to tell the difference. I ever try Pro v1 ball, beside it is more expensive. I felt it is too hard for me too. My swing speed is only 90 -92 mph

I understand there are B330-RXS and cheaper e7. Anybody using these balls now. How it is ?

I buy the B330-RX for between$59 to $69 per box when I passed by Singapore. Golf balls is most expensive in Indonesia and cheaper in USA. You can even have your name print on the ball if you buy more than 2 boxes from most of the on line stores in the States.

Can anybody recommend me other brand of ball to try if I only have a swing speed of 90 - 92 mph on my driver ?

I am currently using 3 models. Bridgestone e6+ / e7+ and Nike Power Distance Soft. Very good for people who have slow swing speed. Just llike me.

Slicer51,

How do you compare the distance for the e6+ with B330-RX? Do you see any difference in driving distance? I like the e6+, but feel that the distance is less than other balls.

Nike One Tour is my preferred ball of choice.
Lower spin with good distance and great control for short game.

Salty Dog,

I felt the B330-RX give me a more solid feel off the tee and better distance too (that is the reason I changed from e6+). However, e6+ give me a better feel around the green. I hope there are ball that is good for distance and soft feel around the green.

I have not try the e7+ ball yet .. any comment anyone ?
