| If you're one of those people who loves golf in spite of not being able to check your phone on the course, you might love the Apple Watch. It provides a more discreet way of doing all the things you do most on your iPhone, so whipping-off a few emails in between holes doesn't require any frantic rustling through your golf bag. It's also integrates with apps in ways that probably makes them more helpful. If, for example, you have an app that measures how much you walk, you'd probably rather wear a wristwatch than carry a phone around in your hand or pocket all day.

Bloomberg.com says that in order for the Apple Watch to succeed, its apps need to solve a problem and work better on a watch than it could on an iPhone. It's easy to see how that could apply more expansively to golf: What about an app that could diagnose your swing flaws just by swinging? Could the Apple Watch one day track your stats in real-time, a la GAME Golf or Arccos, without needing the hardware? Could it track your swing speed based on your arm speed? Could an app tell you where to aim, based on where you're standing on the golf course?
It may seem outlandish, but those products all exist in one form already, and if it catches on, there's no reason to believe they couldn't one day live on the Apple Watch.
"Some of the applications...are extraordinary," writes Christopher Mims of the Wall Street Journal. "Apple Watch will be a launching pad for the next wave of billion-dollar consumer-tech startups."

| The watch seems over-priced for what other gadgets can do. | |

| Wonder if the impact of hitting golf balls over and over will damage the delicate electronics after some time? | |

I am currently using a Samsung watch which is able to give me GPS position and distance to the pin. After almost a year with weeklly weekend golf games, it is working well. No issue. Think the iWatch will be the same.

Hi Watch is Samsung Gear2 but it is linked via bluetooth to my Samsung S5 phone. The App is know as "Golf Navi". Pretty good as I also carry a Bushnell Z6 and did some cross check and distance read is ok. Played often at Marina and Kranji. Also tried it in Thailand and also Taiwan before. Work well also. But it is not free. I think about SGD40. But it is easy to just read off distance on my wrist then taking out my Z6. Too lazy to do that now.

| Does the Samsung app requires data connection? There are many apps on the market for use with smart phones for Golf GPS but almost all requires data connection.
Most of the GPS device on the market is great as there is no need for data connection - especially important when playing overseas or for those of us with limited broadband quota.

You are right. I just off the data on my Samsung S5 and could not pick up JCC course from my home nearby on my Samsung Gear2. Seem that data usage plus GPS is required. Probably didn't realised that as I am always on data roaming whenever I travel. App did mentioned must turn on the GPS of my Samsung phone so I presume it uses 100% GPS... I was wrong then. Thanks for pointing that out.

| a friend recommended me fungolf gps, where you do not need data connection, as you can download the course data before hand. furthermore, it's free. but it's only for iOS. | |

| Such apps drain the watch or phone battery quite quickly | |

My Samsung Gear2 last 3 days with normal usuage. But if used in a 18 holes games golf GPS.. battery drop to 60% balance after game. Still can last another single full day though without re-charging..
