| To me, hybrids have saved my life. They are great clubs to use and easy to play, off the grass or the rough. A good hybrid to get right now given the sales is the Mizuno MX-700 hybrid. Really good ratings and feedback from players. Goes for $159 now which is a real steal | |

| IMO opinion, i dont think a hybrid is useful..
i got a TM rescue dual TP from the sale previously..
and after training for like months? i still cant hit it well..
and hybrid is said to help when you are in the rough on the course..
i also tried in the rough but dint really help me..
so i remove it from my bag and from then on. i use irons to hit it out of the rough..
but some may find it useful, whereas some may not.. for me a 5 wood in my bag is very useful already.
cheers:D | |

| I wrote this a while ago, hope it helps rescue club = hybrid wood= utility club, they are all the same, it's just tht different manufacturer would refer them differently (just to confuse us more). The most common reason to have rescue woods is to replace the feared long irons eg, 2, 3, 4, and maybe 5 iron...whatever irons you lack confidence in. A few golf manufacturers even have a whole set of irons in hybrids. Hybrids are usually thought of as being for the beginner to average golfer but many tour players are using them eg, Jim Furyk, Davis Love, Stuart Cink and many more names are added to the list each day. Most pros find that when they need to hit a high, soft-landing shot of 210-240 yards these clubs do a much better job than a 2 iron. BUT Of coz, the great Tiger Woods would think otherwise and still carries a 2 iron or 5 woods in his bag (but then he's fr Mars and suffers fr 'Transgression') As you look down at a hybrid club, it gives you the feeling that it is easier to hit because it looks more like a wood (=bigger head). It's also shorter than a wood (=more control) and all these add to your confidence. Generally, the head design allows the center of gravity to be moved lower and farther back from the face. This gets the ball up easier and at a higher angle. The loft of utility clubs varies between 15 and 27 degrees typically. A 3 iron will have approximately 21 degrees of loft. Many of us mistakenly think that a 15-degree utility club will produce the same distance as a 15-degree fairway wood. Typically for hybrid irons, they will go about 5-8 yards farther than their iron replacements. If you hit your 3 iron 180 yards than a 3 hybrid should go about 185 but at a bit higher trajectory and not roll as far. Because of its forgiveness and confidence boosting appearance, like many I have opted out the 3 iron in my new set to save some money and use tht to buy something else. (at the end of the day, I still don see any loose change either way, is tht really a saving!!??) In addition, rescue clubs can even save you shots around the green, because of their shaft length, small head, flat sole and loft, you can easily use them to chip the ball.

| actually hor.. a hybrid's head is smaller than a woods's head.. thus making it easier to play.. but then if you got a wood which the head is also pretty small( not so big like the shuttle ,, an example of such wood is TM woods) .. does it still work the same?.. correct me if im not wrong | |

| Ok. What I found out is my opinion only. I think there are 2 distinct groups of golfers - 1 who like or are better at playing irons, and 1 who like or are better at playing woods. Basically to hit a wood, the sensation is like skipping the clubhead off the fairway, catching the ball together with it. For an iron, it's more of a "hit down" sensation. Generally, hybrids play more like an iron. It requires more of a "hit down" action. So if you are finding your long irons (2, 3, 4 and maybe 5 irons) a little difficult to hit, not enough distance, consistency, need a higher trajectory, etc, a hybrid would be useful. But remember it's a "hit down" action rather than a skipping action. Having said all that, if you are more of a wood player, then a short wood might be better. A 5 wood replaces a 2 iron, 7 wood replaces a 3 iron, 9 wood replaces a 4 iron. So you might be better off that way if you are looking for better consistency, distance, etc. My preference is always for clubs that have TALL faces. I find that tall faces give more forgiveness to off center hits. They are also easier off the tee and when the ball is sitting on fluffy lies. For hybrids, I have another preference - "an iron topline". What do I mean? This is an example of a hybrid with a "topline" This is one without The reason is that if I skull the ball (I pray that I will stop this!), it won't leave much of a mark on the paint work. Short faces are also more prone to skulling. But that's just for me. Cheers. Hope you enjoy your time here, Vernon. | |

| Oh and just to add to what I've mentioned. There's also another kind of hybrid. These are meant for really good players (and some helicopter guy who is having a time of his life in Florida, playing lots of golf and maybe making some new dinosaurs. ) Apparently the hybrids that I mentioned before have the tendency to balloon the ball. If you think that you are ballooning then you can try these iron-lookalike hybrids. They are designed like cavity back irons with alot of mass behind the clubhead, lowering the CG to launch the ball higher as compared to traditional blades or muscle backs. I'm assuming that you understand all the terminologies that I have mentioned like blades, muscle backs, etc. If you need further clarification I can further explain myself. My 2 cents. Cheers. | |

| Just received my Adams Speedline hybrid wood 3+. Something in between the Sumo2 wood and hybrid. See how it goes.
These days got hybrid wood, like the Adams Speedline (more like wood...they classify it as wood but it looks like a hybrid, with the really shallow face ). hybrid irons (like the popular Adams Pro Black) or those in between (like the Burner Rescue, MX700)
The good thing about hybrids is I dont need a fast swing. I have a Mizuno Clk Fli Hi 23 degrees, good for punching out of the rough, even with an easy swing. Its feels bit heavy though as compared to the Burner rescue (must check the spec)

| Seiko: what irons are you using now?
Dave: Mizzies are great. I tried the 58 yesterday at Golfhouse and they are so easy to hit. The 68 felt alot like the 62 so no big deal for me.
I think for most golfers, one day we will all gravitate to forged blades/semi-blades. The feel and the looks are too good to resist. More importantly it makes one train harder, eventually makes one a better player.
As you have also mentioned, forged clubs can be adjusted for lies and loft. These are critical elements when it comes to developing a sound golf swing. I'm watching a lady colleague swing clubs that are too long for her and I think it's ruining her swing.

| I'm using Slawenger beginner set now. All graphite. I tried the Cleveland Hibore set yesterday at the green n scored my 1st par for two Par 5 at Starhills. i felt that Hibore is quite forgiving and gives me extra distance which I'm lacking.
Now my DAVID KORKOR "poisoned" me to buy Mx300!!! I'm hesitated by the price tag.

My 2 cents. Cheers. Rocky, Not playing as much now. But you r quite right. These iron-like hybrids are closer to being iron replacements than the bigger ones. BTW, this one old model hor. I got the newer one..

| OB liao! Hahahaha
Hibore is indeed an excellent club. The thing now is to identify which is your distance gap. For example, I hit my 4 iron 160m but somewhat inconsistent. My 3 wood goes about 180-190. My 4 hybrid goes about 175. I often choke down to bring it to 165m. I love this club because it is versatile and it bridges the gap nicely even though, technically, I have 2 4 irons in the bag.
Your issue may be with a 3 iron, 4 iron or even 5 iron - I don't know. When I first started out, I had major issues with hitting a 5 iron and so I got a 5 hybrid to replace it. That really saved me and was a big confidence booster because that was my 150m club. To me, a 150m club is a very important club.

| Yes. I know you got the newer one. I am just illustrating to Vernon on the differences. The way golf companies market their products are really confusing. So how do you find these hybrids? I read your review 2-3 times but I am still wondering if they perform as well as the cavity back such as your 58s. Thinking of getting 1 to try it myself... itchy hands again. Btw I tried the 58s yesterday. They were sweeeeet despite the odd design. - S70B wrote:

| Ok my situation as below:
7 iron: Slawenger (S) = 120mtr, Hibore (H) = 130mtr 5 iron: (S) = 130mtr but not consistent, (H) = 150 mtr ==> 6 or 7 balls straight out of 10 balls.
Normally I don't need 5 or 6 irons bcos it is not consistent. i managed to get par yesterday bcos I used 5 (H) to hit consistently. I'm better using irons compared to hybrid or wood.
