| Just play and enjoy, dont be too stress out. They are not there to fail you but to assess whether you can really "play" on course. Have fun and play safe. | |

| Below is what is stated in MGK's website regarding the Courtesy Round:
"A Courtesy Round is normally conducted before a member is assigned a golf Handicap to assess if the member can demonstrate sufficient practical knowledge of golf rules and golf etiquette and, most importantly, is mindful of his or her own safety and the safety of other golfers on the course. Also, the Courtesy Round is normally used to assess if the scorecards submitted prior to the Courtesy Round are reflective of the actual playing ability of the golfer being tested."
The explanation is very clear. Its is more about safety, knowledge of the rules & etiquette rather than score. Show you are able to play at a reasonable pace that will not hold up the flight behind you and you should be okay. Learn the rules, etiquette and be ready to play your shot whilst waiting for your turn to play. Good luck!

| It still bothers me that despite the explanation that it should not be able score, star golf still puts 53 there for the MGK handicap. Did they just decide on their own to make the standard higher? I wonder why. | |

Hi, So when does one apply for a handicap and CR? Get maybe 3 or 4 on own before applying. My Q1 resolution is to get a handicap and last 18 holes I play was a year before. Is having other cards before mandatory before CR? Can't CR be the first?

| I had my CR at JGCC after submitting a few cards (cannot remember how many required as this was many years ago). Having said this, what was important was not the number of cards I had submitted. The pro was more concerned if I know GOLF EITQUETTE and the BASIC (we were given some rules to study) rules and whether I could advance the ball reasonably such that I would not be unduly delaying the golfers playing behind my flight. The Pro only played a few holes with us and once he was satisfied, he was able to sign the document stating I completed the CR successfully and accorded me a starting handicap (usually 24 for guys). I have heard of some newbies being given 20 or better handicap after CR but these are usually those who previously have played golf without an official handicap. After getting the Hcp, I continued to submit my cards after each game and my handicap was adjusted over time, based on the 10 best scores of the most recent 20 cards submitted. So when should you apply for your CR? Ideally, when you have familiarised yourself with the etiquette and basic rules and feel confident you can advance the ball reasonably (the pros do understand the difficulties that new golfers go through so its ok to mishit some shots. But if you continuously duff, top, air shot, shank, etc, then clearly you are not ready and will bring misery on yourself as well as other golfers if you are allowed to play on the course. | |

Is having other cards before mandatory before CR? Can't CR be the first? The current flowchart for MGK says go for CR first then submit scorecards, also the scorecards must be dated after commencement of MGK membership, see below http://www.mygolfkaki.com/Handicap/GettingMyHandicap.aspx This is not exactly consistent with what is written on the website, I suspect they have not updated it as the original content was written by me was the process was slightly different. Back then, the purpose of the PC was to give you a "L-plate" to play on weekdays to accumulate scorecards (and more importantly experience) before going for the CR. This meant that you had to have at least 5 full 18-hole rounds on a USGA rated course before you could apply for the CR. When you played the rounds were that not important as long as they were relatively recent, i.e. within the last 12 months. It looks like now the system is different at MGK, also, the system is not consistent across the various clubs, so I would suggest that you check with the club that you are planning to join to see what is their specific process.
