| Subject: Question about PC and Handicap Tue Jun 04, 2013 10:56 am | |
| Hi all,
I just picked up the sport in March. No coach, self taught and also YouTube-taught... I know it's not desirable but I have always done sports this way, from tennis to golf...
Anyway, I am fairly confident when it comes to hitting the ball (e.g - 7i hit ard 175 yards, driver about 230 yards). So now I am thinking of trying out some greens. But most need me to have PC or handicap index so I have a few queries.
1. How do I get a PC w/o a coach? 2. How long can a PC last before I must obtain a handicap index?
Would appreciate greatly if anyone can help. Please pardon me for the silly questions - I read through some sites but dun quite understand, especially the part about "courtesy round"...

| Bro, let me first say that it's impressive (IMHO) for anyone to pick up a sport like golf without coaching. So, kudos to you! Keep it up.
But I'm concerned that there's an odd gap in your game. On the one hand, getting 175 yrds with a 7i is freakin' impressive. I can barely get that with my 5i! At the same time, getting 230 yrds with your driver seems about right. But, you've got a 55 yrds gap which you need to fill with various clubs. So, something doesn't seem right. It may be worthwhile getting that looked into.
As for your questions:
1. Yes, I think you can get a PC w/o a coach. Those 2 are separate issues. The question is where you can get a PC. I believe MGK used to do courtesy rounds which gave aspiring golfers a PC which they could use. Of course, having a coach makes it easier as the coach would be able to guide you accordingly.
2. Good question. I recall that mine had a 12 month expiry but that was eons ago. Perhaps a coach or someone from MGK or who has recently received his/her PC/HC can help.
Anyway, best of luck! | |

| Thanks everyone..
I can hit irons very comfortably... In fact, I bought a used 3i last week and after some tries, am able to consistently hit to about 210-220 yards at Punggol range... My wife calls me an Iron Man...
As for driver, I do not take a full swing as it is still very wild. I tend to slice badly if I swing fully... So now I am just focussed on hitting the ball squarely and cutting down the power...
Btw, KL is my initial. I am not based in KL.. Sorry for the confusion...

| On hindsight, maybe there is something wrong with my swing... I dunno but so far so good...
Btw, I used to play baseball competitively so it may have helped in golf...

| Hi there,
Buddy of mine took his up at Golf Allianze.
According to him, his handicap "test" took 30 mins or so.
At the range.
That was a couple of years back. Back then his 7i went 120m, and he still cant get out of bunkers even now....
Might want to give them a call.

| I took up my PC from My Golf Kaki. Got my pc from My Golf Kaki Academy. PC basically can b done within a day. My golf kaki PC allow me to play at mbgc and don't need to do swing test. I was also able to play on weekend. I was able to play at NSRCC par 3 with the PC. Cost of the PC I think about $70 to $80 or so. Can use for a year. Recently I done my handicap after collecting 5 score cards. My golf kaki courtesy round cost about 60++ exclude green fee for 9 hole. Courtesy round done in mbgc and the green fee ard 60+ Hope that helps.
Cheers

Btw, KL is my initial. I am not based in KL.. Sorry for the confusion... Hi TMKL, out of curious may I ask whether u hit yr 3i fm Punggol range on 2nd level or ground flr? The range distance board ends on 200yards n fm ground flr, it ll not b possible to see whether yr ball landed 210, 220 or 230 bcoz the artificial green matt re incline slope? Unless u hit the back net then I can say approx. 240yards. Hope to learn fm u, thks.

| Stress... I hit from both first and second floor... From second floor, a good clean shot with the 3i will sail to the net... But some may also fall past the 200 board and down the slope...
I played baseball and tennis, both at a competitive level. But it is baseball that I feel is more connected to golf. The hip turn when u are about to contact or just contact the ball?
But observers (my kakis) say that my size helps? I am 6"1 and ard 250lbs... Big sized guy...
Like I said, my swing may have problems... So am considering getting a coach soon...
Not expert... Maybe able to hit due to a combination of factors like my past sports and size...

| Hope I have not come across as a show-off or anything... Really have a lot to learn from GRians... Enjoying the sport at the moment as it really surprised me how enjoyable it could be... I always thought golf was boring...
My short game still has lots to work on... Tried putting at the 2nd floor if Punggol range and really terrible at it... I think my wife was better!
Like they always say, "Drive for show, putt for dough!"

| Hi TMKL, welcome to the game of golf...your are in the right mix of good chaps here...
On your query, the pros at Sembawang do issue PC on the spot if they deem that you are safe and good enuf to play on the greens, else you may need to go for a courtesy round. They charged around $70 for the card but not too sure if it's only for members... I can check for you when I drop by this week... Or you can call them to enquire if you need an answer soon. As for the courtesy round.
Cheers. | |

Thanks everyone for your responses! Hope we all continue to enjoy and love this wonderful game! Getting the PC is just the first step. You will need to find a place to subsequently submit your score cards to obtain as well as maintain a recognised handicap that would qualify you to play at golf courses. You have a choice of joining a golf club that has a golf course or an estateless golf club (e.g. MyGolfKaki, Automobile Asso of Singapore (AAS), etc. You should get your PC from the club that you chose to join and thereafter maintain your handicap at that club. Just call the club and ask. Also, do not forget to arrange for your insurance cover through the club.

| MBGC would actually be My Golf Kaki (MGK). http://www.mygolfkaki.com/Home.aspx.
MGK is, I believe, the largest estateless club in Singapore.
A full list of clubs that maintain an SGA handicap can be found here:
http://www.sga.org.sg/Membership/Members/tabid/183/Default.aspx
Ordinary and Associate Members can maintain handicaps.

| Star Golf at MBGC runs a PC test weekly. You can get yours Monday. http://www.stargolf.com.sg/events/ Like the Nike ad says, Just Do It. Welcome to the sport . | |
