I came across a discusson on Dr Sarno, and his theory on how the mind affects the body, specifically the pain we feel.

Google Dr John Sarno Amazon and you'll find his books.

Here's the thread that discusses it.

http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/847164-this-book-should-be-part-of-your-game-and-life-dr-john-sarno/page__st__30

In a nutshell, sometimes in order to avoid dealing with accumulated stress in the psyche, or when the daily mental stress we suppress gets too much, the brain 'protects' itself by creating a different pain to deal with. It can actually create pain in a certain body part by depriving it of oxygen. And when we get told by a doctor that we have condition X causing the pain, the illusion becomes more real and the pain intensifies. Seems it is especially prevalent in the case of back pain. But once the patient understands how the mind is causing the pain, the pain decreases and gradually disappears.

Not surprisingly, his methods are scorned by the medical community in general. And that would be understandable for a business model that runs on prescribing medication and tests and surgery, etc.

At first glance I too thought it was too far out. But check it out and decide for yourselves. Seems many have tried Dr Sarno's methods and avoided surgery, got off pain medication, etc.

Mild swelling of joints? Go under the knife for this?
Suck it up, living in pain is a fact of life. Depending on how old you are and what kind of life you have lived till now this takes a toll on the body.

I agree going under the knife is a decision not to be taken lightly.

In my case, at the wrong end of my 40s, praise my maker, am thus far pain-free despite daily pounding range balls and weekly golfing.

Prior to this golfing lifestyle, was your typical sedentary, full time sales professional. The only exercise was bicep curl using fork, chopstick, whisky glass or the occasional cigar, plenty of aches and pains everywhere, probably onset of gout. Even heart palpitations as well.

So golf has been tremendously beneficial in this area.

Very interesting Lee. Have you read his book? Am thinking of giving a try, since it's relatively cheap. I haven't read a book in years, so I will probably get the audiobook

Not yet. But from what I've in the comments from people who've tried it, their experience based on the theory of Dr Sano seems to bear it out. And there is some plausibility from what I can tell.

However, bear in mind Dr Sarno does not recommend this as a replacement for regular treatment or surgery, and he insists on a doctor checking the patient first before considering this approach. For some who've tried it, their testimony is that it worked for them where all the other conventional treatments failed.

Just picked this up from kinokuniya over the weekend. I don't usually read books, and also a slow reader. May only finish after 2 weeks lol. Will update my progress if any

Matoonia - thanks for posting the pic of the book. I will keep a look out for it.

Don't forget to stretch regularly.
