Hi pro, is it possible to do a back spin in the range? i tried many time at OCC range but only manage to stop the ball instead of backspinning it. I'm using a 50' wedge.

I'm no pro but here are my thoughts:
1. Range balls are often not ideal for backspin. They obviously are not designed for that purpose and their constant use means quality of the ball may not be topnotch.
2. In any case, the inability to backspin may have nothing to do with the ball. It may be a swing/stroke/ball-contact issue which needs to be addressed.
3. Another possibility is that the grooves of your 50˚ wedge are not clean, sharp etc which prevents the ball from spinning effectively.
Oh, a stop ball still requires backspin... the fact that the ball isn't moving forward means that it has spun backwards sufficiently to stop it from running ahead.

Why do you need it to backspin in the range?

Maybe want to hit the same range ball twice? so buy 100 balls, can hit 200 times...

try MBGC, noticed some of my balls spun yesterday. unfortunately, something wrong with my spin, mine's side/diagonal spin.

i think backspin is an impressive concept that people often idealise to, or just misunderstand.
in order to get sufficient backspin, you gotta be hitting well into the ball with a descending blow, holding your impact, and etc etc. (i'm sure many other pros would like to explain this in further detail)
one key point that we often overlook is also that in order for there to be backspin, the ball flight has to be sufficiently high. i learnt this point through observing the pros play at the barclays open.
another major factor in backspin is the green conditions. in SG (or at least at the courses that i play), it is often difficult to generate backspin due to the hardness of the greens, as well as the type of grass even.
that said and done, what is the objective/point of generating backspin? i know S70B was trying to reduce the amount of backspin that he had a couple of months ago cos he was backspinning the thing way off the target.
i think backspin is the requisite result of a well-struck shot, but the main thing i would ask for is control. ie. being able to confidently say that my ball would have a final resting point on the green that is not far from where i intended it to land.
i think i said too much, i'm gonna get shot down by all the pros here. but i think it is necessary to clear up some common misconceptions that people have. that said and done, i'm not that strong a player myself, but i am trying to get there, and this is one of the things which i learnt on my arduous journey to playing better golf.

but i think the grass they use isn't as compact and closely cut as that on the green so the longer grass is bound to make backspin hard to achieve at the range. i've tried to achieve it several times but to no avail! haha

I think can do it at CDAN. first i wasn't quite sure, but managed to repeat that a few times consecutively at the 100m green...therefore i think CDAN can...but dun go there to try...it is already very crowded...

I agree with MT that control resulting from backspin is the end objective.
Pros playing the tour need to generate copious amounts of backspin cos of the slick greens they play on. Still, their ultimate aim is control on those greens, no point sucking it back off the green into water as Tiger Woods did 3 days in a row at Valderama years ago. It looked damn impressive but it hurt his score. Since then, his short game mantra is control. Anyone see him spin it like he used to on tv these days? It's more a hop and stop. When Tiger or most pros decide to suck it back, is when the green slopes back to front providing a backstop, allowing for an aggressive swing to attack the pin. If it doesn't land in the hole moving forward, the backspin will suck it back for a 2nd chance to hole out.
Backspin may draw oohs and ahs, but no point landing beside the pin and seeing ur ball suck back off the green or into a water of a bunker. That sucks big time (no pun intended).

better still..
land it short, cause a ball mark.
spin it back... ... further away from the pin.
and find out later that the ball mark is on the putting line.
