| The decision to take the step to seek help to improve the mental game is a very personal one, until the player wants (or realises he needs) training to improve his mental game and truly believes that it will help, I doubt if anything anyone says is going to change his/her mind. At the risk of generalising, golfers, by and large, are relatively successful (or have other means of financial security), and tend to have strong opinions about themselves and their needs. Seeking mental help may be perceived as akin to acknowledging mental weakness. Given that most golfers pick up the game late in life, it seems socially acceptable to play lousy golf because of physical reasons (it can always be justified by "if only I had to the chance to learn as a kid, I would definitely be as good as any pro"), but admitting that lousy golf scores come from a weak (or unfocused) mind is something else entirely. Another reason could be a misunderstanding about what the mental aspect of golf offers. Many golfers might feel that their physical and technical proficiency is not at a level at which they can benefit from mental training. That it is something reserved for top athelete's looking for an edge, who have already achieve physical and technical competency. Not really for social golfers who are struggling with duffing, topping, slicing, etc etc. They do not believe that improving the mental aspect will improve the actual physical outcome. However, I dare say that golfers with strong mental games, whether self-taught or otherwise, tend to win more often than not, so if certain golfers choose not to see the value of the mental game (or in extreme cases, insist golf is purely physical), then it really is up to them ... after all ... if there are only sharks and no fish ... what is the point? | |

Mental game training doesn't fall into that category, and it sure has no resale value in the marketplace. But when you start winning the bets you can buy more gear....
Marketing a golf psychology class via winning more bets sure sounds like a great sell.

See that's why I need mental help... I cannot understand this philosophy : What you are saying is "if everyone plays good golf, why bother playing golf"?

| Love the conversations. Just saw on Golf SG's website/Youtube. Gotta love this clip that sums it up. If the link doesn't work, search for Remembering Angelo: Worst Avid Golfer on Youtube. Cheers!

| “I always think putting is the biggest part of the game and also the psychology part. So those are the two things I would like to build up. I’ve got a couple of years until I turn pro so I guess within that period hopefully I’ll be able to get a little bit better.” Lydia Ko, 15
The workshop is fully subscribed and we are all set for this evening. I look forward to meeting all of the participants later. Next run will be likely in Apr so stay tuned.

| We had our first session last night at BFG and it was great to connect with the participants who were a fun yet committed bunch. As we went around collecting expectations, it became clear that some of the central themes to cover were: 1. How to achieve consistency over the entire round, 2. How to maintain focus amidst the distractions, 3. And how to maintain composure under pressure
Which of these resonates with you and what do you do?
To those who attended, remember to practice your ABCs! Cheers.

| We finally concluded the golf workshop last week with a session focused on fine-tunning the mental game of respective participants, and setting the stage for future development. Given the positive response, we will have another run in Apr. Do check out the link www.golfmindpower2.eventbrite.sg to register. The group size was a bit large so I will be reducing the next intake to ensure a quality experience. Please contact me if you have any other queries. Hope to see you at the workshop. Cheers.
