Painting your clubs

Dan, after seeing what u do to ur driver head i went home try on a old cobra S 2 in orange to go with my orange shaft u.saw at OCC. will upload some photo later.

i think need to choose the easier driver like TM easy straight line stupid S 2 curve all over :-)

intend to do this to my 975D as well, change it from grey to matt black... but have not even get the paint... will try to get the paint this week and hopefully can start working on it

already wanted to paint it before this thread, coz i bought it recently and one part of the paint near hosel has chipped off... so might as well try to paint it... the driver only cost me $30.. no real harm if I mess it up

Next will try shaft

I like my old fairway woods so I refuse to change to newer models. So instead of spending money on new clubs, I spray paint my old fairway woods once a year on the average, mainly to cover up scratches, dents, and to change colour just for the fun of it and suit my new taste. Many of my friends actually thought I buy new clubs when they see new colours on my club head.

The first time I did this I googled on spray painting techniques (for carbody work) and follow the steps recommended, which is generally covered above.

I use paint removers (easy to find in hardward shops) to strip away all old paints, sand paper away any deeper scratches and then I prepare the metal surface with dishwashing liquid and solvents, and then blow dry it with a hairdryer to get rid of water vapour trappped in the metal surface before I tape the bare part, using industrial grade masking tapes and newspapers. It's important to use good precision tapes, or you will find jagged paint edges when you remove the tapes.

I then apply 2 layers of epoxy under coat for better adhesion to metal surface, followed by 3 layers of chosen colours, and 3 layers of clear lacquer to protect the colour and to make it shiny.

Choose a dry sunny day to do this, and apply each coat in 15 minutes interval, holding the spray can about 1 foot from the metal surface. Make sure you shake the can well, and spray away from the clubhead first to see if there are droplets. If the spray is nice and misty, bring the stream to the surface. Apply only thin layer, not more than 2 passes each coating, or you will see smudges and wavy patterns on the painted surface. In between each coat, you can either use a hair dryer to bake the paint or leave it under the sun.

Keep the tapes on overnight before you remove them very slowly and carefully, at 45 degree angles so that you will not accidentally tear away the paints. I will not use the club for about a week to let the paintwork set in.

It's an enjoyable hobby.

Haha. yah lor. kiasu mah! first attempt didn't know anything. didn't consider about the weight.

Bro. if u want a matter finish like the taylormades. u can try spraying the last layer further away. that'll leave a more matte and powdery finish. then finish off with matte lacquer. but spray the clear coat a little closer. or the finish will be like sandpaper. rough rough kind.




After reading think will go back do another layer of clear coat a little closer, now look abit rough like Abadan said.

lol..bro dan i think its something fun and costs lesser than a grip change haha..hope the rest have fun with customising their clubs too. i think soon can have a gathering to paint clubs together

Wow! Radical color bro! Pretty darn good job! but the paint like a bit of speckles. that's probably cus u never spray even enough, or the nozzle could be abit clogged. so instead of spraying mist, there are some bigger droplets.

LOL! yeah.. and TKSS in between coats. hahaha. What better way to spend a rainy weekend.

Finally repsray my driver...

Driver model: 975D
Colour: Original - grey (did not take any pic), change to black
Total cost: $16 (1 can black flat, 1 can clear coat, 1 280 sandpaper, 1 paint remover, 1 masking tape)

Final product, did not do a very good job, wanted matt but did not really achieve it. may sand it down a bit with very fine sandpaper and see how it turns out.




These 2 triangle are meant to be glossy, not really visible from the pic.



It is easier to have a glossy finish... for matt, I hv problem getting the right distance from the driver.

Total I hv 3 coats of black and 2 coats of clear coat. will go to the range tonight and see if it will affect the ball flight... may add a few more coats at the 2 triangles to pull the weight down, if the paint really make a significant difference to the weight...

will the paint go off when it come in contact with grass/ground? anyway, its quite interesting to paint your own clubs

No idea, but will be playing this friday and will know if the paint will come off.

I've done that... let's see if I can find some photos.

played a round with it yesterday and used the club about 5 times and the paint on my hybrid didn't come off..even put it through the club washer test and it turned out alright. i figure its important to apply thin coats and built up to avoid uneven distribution of paint.

shall go experiment with removing the paint again and try for a matt grey/silver finish hahaa

paintfill on the logo is much easier than spraying... you can just paint over the whole area and when dry, just use nail polish remover to remove the excess

Hi abadan, isn't it a bit risky to sand down on a graphite shaft? it might affect the integrity of the shaft. no? personally, i wouldnt dare to do it.

anyway, i'm also into spray painting my clubs =) im going to start a project on my scotty newport detour. still haven't decided on the colour though. any suggestions? =)

Spraying the shaft was kind of an experiment. It was a very old and fade limey shaft, that my fren had intended to abandon. so instead of killing it.. we tot no harm reviving it.

I think the only thing to notice is that it'll prob increase the weight of the shaft by a few grams. owner likes the look of it and doesn't feel any loss in the shaft's performance.

U intending to respray the entire putter or just doing the the words? I personally would prefer a matte putter cus of the glare. but color wise... that's entirely up to u bro.
