How many times in a 18 hole game u use approach wedge?
Understand depending on the distance need to achieve. But is it a must to have approach wedge?

If the distance between approach vs pw is 10 yard, than I feel weird.
Cause base on research most professional could not have precise gauge of distance unless with the help of a range finder equipment. Mostly base on personal gauging will have a +/- 10-30 yard for professional or more. Thus will approach make a diff vs pw if difference is 10 yard?
Sorry just curious.

Hi bro, approach wedge distance varies for individual.

Suggest u try it out at range first...

Do join e PGA group gathering every thursday at punggol range to try out some diff loft approach wedge!

Cheers

Mostly ppl will go for 4 deg diff, like 52,56,60.Some ppl as for me 56 or 60 even sometime 52 oso could be my sand wedge, just my 2 cent.

I would say thereabout... Me using a 52deg thou...

A approach wedge would close up e distance between a pw and sand wedge.

Usually e "go to aka money club" for most players...

Hey Starbucks ... where do i start? Let me address your original question first:

Historically the PW was approx 48 degrees and sand wedge 56 degrees ... but as buyers demanded more distance the manufacturers began "strengthening" the lofts of the irons ... The PW came down to 44-46 degrees whereas the SW stayed at 56 ... This gap became considerable, and the approach/ gap wedge was introduced to fill the void at approx 50 degrees

An approach wedge is definitely not a MUST to have ... but it really helps! As an excercise find out your PW and SW distances ... And see how big the gap is ... And if you are faced with an in between yardage, are you still able to hit the target (by a shorter swing, choking down, slower swing etc etc)??? If not , then the approach wedge could come handy!

The gap between the pw and aw depends on the loft of your irons ... But usualy it would be around 10-15m

Now regarding your question on gauging distance .... in tournaments where I am not allowed to use my rangefinder ... I am still able to measure the distance of the ball from the center of the green using the courses distance markers (counting steps) ... And the only thing i need to gauge is the distance of the flag from the center of the green ... Since i know the color of the flag and hence its general location on the green , i think my margin of error is approx 5m or so

Hope it helps , and will eloborate if anything is unclear

Just to confuse you more, it all depends on the type of sand, if hard, wet, I use my 60* lower bounce, nice soft sand I use 56* higher bounce.

if in waste bunker or tight lie, I use 52* lower bounce....

Confused enough??? Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes Shocked

I used to carry a 50 Deg Approach wedge to compliment my 46deg PW, 54 Deg SW and 58 Deg LW

but I have given it up in favour of another hybrid, and learn to play a 3/4 PW shot to cover that gap

so, is AW really important? it really depends on how you wanna set up your bag, and what shots can you execute.

I strongly recommend those who are less comfortable with 3/4 shots to have 4 wedges as it is easier to hit full shots

for me i keep a 4 degrees difference in my wedges my PW 48* GW 52* and my SW 56*

GW /AW to me is important because of the difference in bounce and lofts to the SW , my GW has a 8* bounce .

GW bridges the gap between the SW and PW , GW gets pull out when under 100m but more than 60m which happens more regularly than landing in the green side bunker . or after the rain green side bunker becomes hard packed also use the GW because of the bounce .

to me a GW/AW is more important than a lob wedge (60*)

Bro, I guess you already have your answer from all GR members here. However, may I know how many wedges do you use now and what are the loft ? (PW, AW, GW & LW).

How far can you hit each wedges in full swing ? Would you know which wedge to use to hit consistent for 100, 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 40, 30 & 20 meter ?

With that knowledge, perhaps you know whether you do need a approach wedge.

I am still struggling a bit with my wqedges as well... Thinking of buying 1 brand just to make things easiers for myself...

PW - Titleist AP1 - about 105m distance
52 - Team Yoshimura - Distance 90m
SW - old thing, but I like the feel - Distance 80m
60 - Vokey - Distance 75m

Biggest problem is that I practiced my 60 and PW a lot, so I can really hit those quite close, leaving me messing up the 52 and SW... The more I practice, the more I feel the need to have 1 feel in all clubs and not different feeling with different club. Dunno if this makes sense...

Starbucks .... AP2 pw is 47 deg, and your sw 56 ... So consider getting a 52 vokey .. Or learn to hit a 3/4 pw

besides filling the distance gap between the Pw and Sw...

the Aw is useful for your short game around the greens...

if your short game revolves a lot of bump n run, then Aw is a must....

seriously la....

I would think a full 52 would be used to red-pins as there is more room behind the flag to land and let the ball spin up front, but a 3/4 PW would be for blue pins where there are more room to land in front of the flag and let the ball roll up to the flag....

PS: My big signature now is a dig to my Arch-Nemisis.
