| I want to chip in on this topic.
I have been playing with the G15 for a year and brought my hc down to 14 from 20. Then backside itchy like most aspiring weekend golfer. I upgraded to a Miz MP 53 hoping to bring my golf to the next level. Alas, it is not to be. The reality set in that player iron is more demanding and having been on the bigger size club face and switching to a smaller face, I have to pay for the price. Any less than perfect or almost perfect impact will be obvious. There is lesser forgiveness. A mishit that end up at most a chip and putt in the past becomes another 1-2 strokes to the green.
The reality sets in for me that maybe I am not ready for this. But then I won't know if I never try. Do I regret buying? Maybe and I ask myself why I wanna to punish myself?
Just to share my own experience. Thanks for reading.

After all live is short. Just because people says it tough doesn't mean you cannot handle it.
As a true blue golfer you must try blade. Feel the sweet impact and the beauty of the blades. How it cut up a nice piece of divot. How it feel to nip the ball off the tight fairways. How you could make the ball dance on the green. How you screw tarik your ProV1. Carve the ball according to the contour of the fairway. How you manipulate under and above the trees...
Until proven you really can't do this....its still not too late to change to others. You call yourself a golfer....without ever playing blades? i like you bro seebayho..very "encouraging" If I were you go for full blades. I always believe its ok for beginners to play blades. That how you train yourself to be good. If you start will crap head, later when you want to upgrade you will find it hard. Example, why everyone wants to send their children to top premier school (Blade) why? Why don't they start with neighborhood school (game improvement) the logic is the same.

General speaking you could be right, street smart vs book smarts. To test if your logic is correct, you will be sending your children to Ah beng and Ah Lian school to learn how to sovle those K_N problem? Just joking. BTW, I'm from Universty of K_N .

| @willbudiman,
Just switched from JPX800 to a set of of Titleist MB690 blades 2 weeks ago. Had the JPX800 since last December.
Most bros here are right, experienced an instant drop in scores. However, i would classify blades as swing improvement clubs. It amplifies your mishits and keep you in the know of the reality of your swing.
I find it very fulfilling to get flush hits on the blades and I strongly recommend you pick up a set of blades. It will improve your swing.

| If you intend to play blades, can consider Adams MB2, pretty high on forgiveness from mygolfspy's review.
In terms of feel...just ask Asahi.

| Public service warning, long post ahead. When I first got my blades, the intimidation and fear factor was very real. So much so that I stored away the blades for a long time until I felt my swing was 'good enough'. With my Mizuno MP52, I got to the point where I was hitting 9 iron 150m and lowered my score from 100+ to 92. I felt damn cocksure. My swing must be damn good man, I thought. I looked and looked and looked at my swing videos, and could not find anything wrong with them. But just to be safe, to prepare to hit the blades, I looked up Adams hybrid and bought what was reputed to be the hardest hybrid to hit, the Adams Pro Black. The loft was 18 degree. Could not launch it to save my life initially. Then slowly, managed to launch it. Wow, my arrogance reached new heights. I must be damn good man. Lets take out the blades now. I was READY. Then.... Oh... my... god... what is this???? Can't even launch 8 iron???? Welcome to Shanksville. Population 1 stubborn idiot. Turned out, I had many fundamental flaws in my swing. The MP52 was forgiving them. The Adams Pro Black hybrid flushed some of them out, left some of them in. The blades? Flushed out every last bit of flaws with the fundamentals, especially the longer irons. The longer they go (9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3), the less they forgive, the more flaws I discovered with my swing. A few solid months of daily range study and video analysis later, and I mean solid, 5-6 hours per day, 200-400 balls, and 2-3 hours of studying the resulting videos... I understand the swing more than I understand myself. Those swing videos using my MP52 that looked so good a few months back? Wow! How could I be so blind! The flaws are now so obvious. Why couldn't I see them before? Because when the shots went well, I stopped looking. It's human nature. Like Panji says, blades are a precision instrument. (Shout out to my bro Panji, good tempo there my friend.) It measures your swing and goes wrong with the slightest flaw. I have long since forgotten I was playing blades. Forgotten the fear factor. Forgotten I am supposed to be intimidated by them. Instead, every time I swing, I am reminded of my fundamentals. My stance, my grip, my posture, my takeaway, my tempo, etc. So much so, it has become automatic. If I was running a busy life in Singapore, where both time and green fees are at a premium, and I want to enjoy the rare moment I can get away for a few hours, I would load my bag with every forgiving technology known to man. On the other hand, if I want to take my swing and related to that my game to its maximum potential, and have the time and resources to invest into it, I would choose the most effective route. So, bro willbudiman, since you are 14-15 handicap now, you are definitely ready for, and able to handle, full blades. If you can put in the time and study. Definitely your handicap will suffer in the mid term. Then, gradually, it will improve beyond what you thought was possible. And you'll realize what you've been missing all this while. The forgiveness is preventing you from discovering a whole new world of the swing that is hidden within you. Your body is capable of moving in ways you never imagined possible, and won't discover, as long as the club is masking and blurring the feedback. Of course, many people will disagree with this, citing pros who don't play blades, scratch players and low handicappers who don't play blades, etc. They will argue, after all, isn't scoring low the reason we play golf? Why not find the easiest way to score low by using the latest forgiving technology? And they do have a point. From their perspective, they are indeed correct. To me, it's a bit like getting a long putt as a given. Or getting a mulligan. I can put the score down. The score looks improved. But I know my game, my skill, actually have not. I enjoy sharing the pleasure of my blades with my fellow range rats and offer them my clubs to try. Even among some low handicappers, I can see the doubt in their eyes as they look down on the thin top line. Some shots will go well, some will not. And they hand the club back, convinced they can't hit blades. But the really good players can hit anything in my bag, including the Adams Pro Black. In the beginning, some of them were hoping I would give up and and sell my clubs to them cheaply. They would be waiting in vain. It's not for everyone certainly. It's an individual decision. To me, by flushing out bad habits before they become permanent, the hardest route turns out to be the shortest. As Tom Wishon said, blades are the true game improvement clubs. And as Confucius said, the man who thinks he can, and the man who thinks he cannot, are both right. And my apologies for this gratuitously long post. Peace. | |
