i have one loan out to a friend. this driver is totally crap. too much whipping action, the ball either slices or balloons. must have a smooth swing in order to play this. only suitable for players with a swing speed less than 100mph. definitely not for hard hitters. i may consider selling if the price is right. Driver is pretty new, only twice on green and driving range.

Actually you are spot on about this driver being suited for those with a swing speed less than 100mph. In fact, that is exactly how it was marketed and in various communications, Cleveland have repeatedly mentioned this driver is optimized for swing speed 95mph and below.

Contrary to popular belief, or a severe case of selection bias (i.e. patterns in a small sample size, e.g. own circle of friends, are projected to a much larger group; golfers in general), the VAST majority of amateur golfers have driver swing speeds below 100mph. The vast majority do not CARRY their 7irons 150m.

From your comment, I am inferring that both you and your friend have swing speeds in excess of 100mph. In that case, you belong to the rare minority, the elite few, the special breed of golfers that have real distance. Be glad. There is an entire industry of aftermarket Stiff, X-Stiff and TP shafts and clubs waiting for you.

However, please be responsible in your comments as your experiences with equipment are likely to be very different from the rest of us who have average or slow swing speeds. You might have the swing speed to launch a 3 iron, and cause a standard 3 hybrid to hook uncontrollably (thus calling it crap), but for most amateur golfers, an off the shelf 5 hybrid (or 4 or 3) is going to help them with their game and their scoring. A lot of beginners come into this forum looking for advice, and I would hate to see GR turn into Golfwrx where everybody can 2 on Par 5s regularly (some with 7i) and nobody seems to hit a driver less than 250 yds.

As the honorary president of the Shorthitters Club (SHiC), I have a solemn duty to uphold the club charter and champion the cause of the average golfer. And as an average mid-handicap golfer myself, I understand the envy we feel toward long hitting good players. This envy could lead to us believing (incorrectly) that if we use the same equipment as the professionals and scratch golfers, we can play as well as them (as long as we practice hard). I seriously doubt if that is the suitable route for the majority.

In any case, all these are my personal opinions ... peace!

Loving this club, suits my 90ish swing.
Agree on smooth swing to play this.
Light stick and can last full round of golf (and more)

I'm a slow swing player also (or i believe so...)

Got mine last friday and managed to test it properly in the range yesterday. Happy the first 10+ ball landed around 190m with some carry distance...

Much lighter in weight as compared to my old TM Burner driver, hopefully can last through the entire game and consecutive games too.

Next round is field trial this coming Monday at Palm Resort.

Very Happy

Sayhun, last friday, Pan West was advertising that for 199. It will be interesting to see how low GD will retail them at.

Thanks Blee. I have low swing speed and my ball slides a lot. Just hope this will improve my distant.... That is very reasonable and hope to see lower price from GD.

Give us more comments after your round.

Sayhun,

I am just an average golfer.

Look at Derek's comment and you will know. Since having that ugly black thing, Derek driving distance has gone so far that he almost lost the SHIC position... What a Face

@Blee ... don't exaggerate lah Razz I found some distance with the CG Black, but nowhere near enough to lose my position as SHiC President

Driver Distances (carry)
9 Deg Stated Club Loft - Launch angle dunno

Bad Drives - 170m - 180m
Ave/Ok Drives - 180m - 200m
Good Drives - 200m - 220m
Great Drives - 230m - 235m (once in a blue moon)

I found about 20m more carry, but that was not solely due to the CG Black, changed some swing changes also (basically less sway more rotate). Biggest impact of using this driver is that it forced me to ingrain a smooth tempo. My playing swing speed (driver) went from 87mph to 95mph with these changes. However, when I compared the CG Black against other drivers at the Den, the club speed difference was minimal, 2 MPH at most (I am not consistent enough of a ball striker to measure speed difference of off center hits).

The CG Black is not a magic club. In fact, the shaft is downright unforgiving in terms of demanding a smooth tempo. But I sincerely believe that if you practice with it and gain a basic level of competence with it, your overall ball striking across all your clubs will improve.

p.s. I actually thought with a smoother tempo my club speed had dropped until I got it measured via trackman. It feels slower and smoother, but the figures show it is faster and the ball travels further

Guess it is time to revisit this after the initial furore ... just wondering if the love affair ended abruptly for some of you with this driver, and you have since parted ways, or if you are still using it and lovin' it.

For me, it is still in my bag, but it isn't the same club I bought.

I trimmed it by an inch, 3/4 from the tip and 1/4 from the butt, and then added 5gms via lead tape at the bottom of the driver. Final swingweight around C5 or C6 I think.

Seems to be working very nicely for me in this configuration.

P.S. Before I stuck the lead tape at the bottom, was having some issues launching the ball, but everything seems fine now with it, amazing what 5gms can do (although in swing weight terms i guess 2 swingweights does make a difference).

I'm still using it...tried the g20 and cobra zl encore and both gave the same distance but the cg black was still much more forgiving.....i had problems with the black for a while but after wiping sham's paw prints from the shaft, it was right as rain......

The black 9* 39S is back in my bag.
Switched out to TM R9 in order to test GD Pershing 65R and xcaliber shafts tour SL 48R shafts.
Overall, very happy with the black driver, easy to launch driver. Smile

I got mine from golfhouse. $10.90 per pack.
Contains 2 strips.

Derek, can you please show a PIC of where you paste the lead tape? I'm curious where is a good place on the base cos I'm doing the same on my CG UL290 driver after I cut the shaft down. Thanks.
