Sadly enough, it is quite common and being friendly normally encourages more "tips"

normally, a polite "Thank you, but I would like to practice by myself" suffices

Golf incites passion, and most people like to share their passion, so it is sort of understandable, most of them will politely walk away if you make it clear

Try not to fall into the trap of trying to show them just how could you are as that could negatively affect your practice session

Maybe because you are a pudgy old, fat uncle as well and not a hot chick with a good body?

I get advice all the time but it's typically along the lines of, "start by losing weight" at which point I just hit the ball harder and try to aim at them as they walk away.

This happens to me all the time... both at the range (on the rare occassion when I go) and on course as well. NBz... practice on chipping green also got some uncle come and "teach" me how to chip.

Must be I too lousy that everyone wants to teach me how to golf.

Anyway, I usually entertain them by asking them to demonstrate. Then if they really suck, then I bet with them the following games:
1) Uncle on chipping green, 3 balls closest to pin
2) Uncle at driving range... see who can send a ball to the back of the net
3) Uncle at driving range again (as he say his driver is short)... 8 iron, see who can hit further

If they are good, then most prob they will not be giving "advice" in the first place.

As a super newbie, I constantly encounter this when I decide to practise alone at the driving range.

Guess its quite hard for me to turn someone away, I always find myself chatting with them and listening to their 'advices'. maybe subconsciously its messing with my swing, thats why I'm not improving at all. Sad

Agreed!

Played with a low HCP last weekend with very good golf etiquette, only miss a few par.

I always receive "advice" from the uncles...

I know I don't swing well, but sometimes, I feel a bit embarassed by their advice...

Nonetheless, I do listen (hoping to catch some advice) coz obviously they can swing better than me.., Personally, I think it's more of a friendly gesture of the golfers...

This is the best solution... dun let your practice be affected. And i agree that some people are just passionate about the game. No point getting upset... Rolling Eyes

Just curious from this 'outlander to SG golf culture', is this kinda thing happening frequently at driving ranges?

Cos I never have anyone coming up to me on the Driving Range in thailand offering me 'friendly' advice. The only advice I got from was from my instructors.

Wondering what would happen once I come back and start hitting local ranges for practice....

I usually peeked at others golf set and admire shining new toys.
I walked back to my range bay and sulk..

On a serious note, you can learn a thing or too if someone is keen to offer some pointers. the decision to accept is yours ultimately. (I would gladly stand back and drink my beer and watch what he feels is wrong with me, and I observe. Whether I take his advice, its a different matter, but I do get a perspective from someone watching my butt..)

I am a self taught golfer, i learn by watching how golfer(good) swing. Hence, i know what is the difference between good and average golfer.
There are a few uncles whom i will seek advice from at the range, many thanks to thier advice, i am enjoying the game now.
