Play for fun. Sometimes win, sometimes lose. Oh well.

In any event, the one thing I've learned is that golf is a game which challenges yourself. If you cheat, you are the ultimate loser. You only misrepresent to yourself how you've really played.

Such is golf.

I think the whole thread started by the origin poster .... more like along the lines of ' confession and sharing of cheat methods'....... honestly, I don really pay much attention unless there is money involved....and most times, at least for me, the sticky situations is around 'mis-cal' of scores

No money, I don care...you play double bogey and record birdie...good for you but note that we should based on the score you last played in such situation.

But if have money (significant), wah...that will require close companionship by walking 'hand in hand' everywhere everytime to any shot.

underdeclare= cheating

overdeclare= cheating

now in strokeplay competition, if u play a 5 on a hole and submit a 6. the higher score stand. if you score a 5 and submit a 4. automatic DQ! Smile

I do have friend who cheat and can even just laugh it off.... shameless.... why is there a need to cheat?? if you can good, you are good.

Sometimes this type of character can be found in their children.... I'm not cursing anyone but thats what I encounter.

Truth be told, I find instructions from big name coaches like Leadbetter, Butch Harmon and even Hank Haney damn difficult to understand. Tips, however, from lesser known PGA coaches seemed to work on me.

I know there are quite a number of folks who submitted lower score than their actual play because they want to hit the magic number 18 so that they can play off blue tees. Is that counted as cheating?

On the other side of the fence especially outside of Asia, a lot of folks always claimed that they have much lower handicap than their true ability. Is that cheating too?

Some folks also claimed they didn't understand the rules well enough and unintentionally drop the ball outside the permitted threshold. Seriously, it is endless. As long as it doesn't hurt others' feelings or pockets, for hell I care if anyone cheats because they are only cheating themselves afterall.

I find that strange. In the west, unless forced to tee off blue, everyone would prefer white because can save alot of walking and lose less balls. In fact, sometimes div B competitors are given the options to tee white in competition to speed things up.

This is a good question. I believe in social golf there is some adjustment e,g not counting mulligans or taking a mulligan here and there. Also I think there could be error in understanding the rules when there is OB, lost ball, water, etc so miscounting is possible. I do believe people do adjust their scorecards before submitting --- is that cheating, perhaps but i suppose if you let your flights mates know what your submitting and they are okay with it should be fine...obviously it cant be a crazy adjustoment! I see this happen all the time... especially with people who have a low handicap and want to maintain it....

The word cheating is quite strong and i think a majority of golfers do not cheat...unless there is something large at stake!!!! hahha but even if they did they would be quite nervous about it coz its quite easy to traceback especially if you are scratch golfer or low handicapper... for the guy who shoots 40 over no one really cares!

I really don't see the point of submitting a wrong score intentionally, especially if it has to be countersign by a marker. That's collusion. If a guy is scratch player, an ocassional ballooned score should not hurt his handicap. Same for a high hdcp player who ocassionally go low.

Anyway, one can falsify a score but very hard to falsify a good golf swing.

Don't ever bet for money if you don't trust that guy. If you have to bet with money then try to give your opponent a benefit of doubt whensoever there is an unsure situation. That's how to maintain a long lasting golf kaki.
I have also done the following cheating,
1) 1 feet putt, I try to tap with 1 hand but the ball stuck in between the putter and the ground but I consider it as a gimme.
2) I look at my flight mate putting line.
3) While addressing at the tee off, the ball drop from tee, but I place it back without counting any penalty stoke
4) I change to a better control ball on par 3
5) Tell my flight mate to play from fairway and take 2 stokes penalty instead of go back and re-tee when his ball is found to be OB

What a Face

This then begs the following question:

If you are the better golfer playing against a weaker golfer and you know that he/she is not declaring a proper score, would you say anything? Clearly, being the better golfer, you already have the lead. Assuming that there is money at stake but the amount is small, would you just close an eye and let it slide? Simply, would you mind losing a couple of dollars instead of correcting your weaker flightmate and possibly, upsetting the rest of the game?

If I am the weaker player - I will try to ask the better player on strokes that I am not sure. Try to ask and clear my doubt on how to record score.

If I am the stronger player - I will try to correct him on the first few holes but if he/she still want to count his/her own way then I will let it be I love you

1) If agreed before game begin that putts within putter length = gimme, just take. However, when you decide to stroke the ball and it didn't went in, then add stroke even if it was gimme before; this I understand to be the rule. Matchplay may be diff. I think others may want to opine on this.
2) I think it's ok. Could be wrong.
3)As long as the club had not commence the downswing, no penalty. It can be infinite times theoretically.
4) This one not sure. Maybe gurus here can shed some light.
5)This one is magnanimous cheating Very Happy

So let's say you aren't playing to the rules Very Happy

Rule violations I commonly see and have committed myself:

Tell flightmates what's wrong with their swing and how to change. Matchplay situation, offenders can lose the match I think. Strokeplay situation, I don't know the penalties. Maybe gurus here can chip in.

I hate to be on the receiving end of the above, well-intentioned or otherwise.

Honestly, if money changes hand in a golf game, offenders will lose their amateur status. That means you don't have handicap number anymore because you become a pro! Very Happy

That's why I only bet with biscuits or muesli bars. Perfectly ok. So you guys are now pros!

dun forget asking what club he hit. Very common.

Another rules violation is on the green during team matchplay, their team mate will point to the aimpoint for his partner using the flagstick or the putter. You are not suppose to touch the putting surface if you want to indicate to your buddy.

Likewise, I have had alot of flightmates stand directly behind my line when I am trying to putt. I will not mention much if he is new but I will stop and look at him if its a money game.

I think you must be thinking everyone here is playing big money:

or just that the lack of being in the culture of betting with money makes you think otherwise.
