I guess it may be assisted with the wind or just pure roll.. but his 5i typically goes 160m.. He's not very tall around 165 cm..
But I guess his placebo is he trusts his swing more than any equipment.. Its just a coincidence that I got him a Miura on that day...
The point I am trying to drive is similar to what Eiji said, regardless what equipment good or bad.. if u believe it in..it will work.....
thanks. reading your story i would have thought otherwise.. Mizzy, long story short, it is the Indian not the arrow...

Found in the marketplace a bro selling one used MIURA MC-102 for that price with tour concept shaft.
We dealt the next day and then we proceed for a game in MBGC with his new MIURAS. Do note that my friend is not an equipment junkie and he havent heard of Miuras till that day.
So proceed with our game, on the par 3, 177m, he took out the 5 iron and was just planning to play it short and chip. Boom! it trickled into the green and since it was a red pin, he had 2 putts for par...
Again, on the 150m par 3, 15 feet from pin and 2 putts for par..
This was the first time he used his Miuras. Altogether he squeezed 3 pars and a bogey for the par 3s and many approach shots that made me lighten my pockets..
I do believe that for some , it may be a placebo effect, but my friend who doesn't even believe in changing grips, washing clubs, using club covers, club fitting, grip type, trackman etc... its been working well for him.
Perhaps if he is fitted properly, he might play better but all he believes in is himself.. cocky b*$%^d... Wow, what an intriguing story, Begbie. Since (a) your friend has never heard of Miura before, and (b) it was the first time he used Miura on a course (from the description, it does not sound like he used them before), and (c) he used to make several accurate approach shots, made several pars, etc, I'm getting the following thoughts: 1. Placebo effect? He's not heard of Miuras before, right? 2. Coincidence? He made good shots with them not once, but several times in the round, and furthermore, in the first (few?) time that he's playing w them on the course. An interesting story... and food for thought.... I've never hit anything other than the tournament blade and the small blade before. Now I'd be interested to try the MC102 to see what it's like.

I agree, placebo effect is well-documented. However, in the context of the 3-iron I was describing above, I was focusing solely on the changes I was making to the swing. Initially it was not so good, did not find the sweet spot with the swing changes. So my mind was concentrating on the swing, and the feel of the pivot reacting to the changes. Gradually I got used to it, and when I finally found the sweet spot, I was STUNNED. I have hit the 3-irons quite often before, but this was something else. Wow! I said out loud at the range. I was NOT expecting that. It surprised even me. I thought I had experienced all the set had to offer. Apparently I was mistaken. There was more depth to be enjoyed, to be discovered, as my swing improved further. I will savour the process. - eiji wrote:
if the muiras give you so much joy in the game of joy, even if i pass you some less reknown iron that is in fact truly softer both in terms of design and material used, you would still think that the miuras are softer, better, etc etc. being prejudiced for/against(whichver the case) is what is causing you to think that the miuras are indeed so soft etc etc.
If there are irons which are better than Miura's, then I would certainly LOVE to try them. Epon comes strongly recommended, is reputed by some to be softer than Miuras, but so far I have not had a chance to try them yet. - eiji wrote:
in fact, the whole feel thing with irons is no touch, its the sound. on well struck shots, it the sound and the lack of vibrations that give you feedback/impressions.
Yes, there was an experiment by Scotty Cameron removing the sound from putters, which found that without sound, the players could not differentiate among the different-feeling putters. Whether the feedback is via feel, sound, vibration or lack of it, whatever the feedback channels are, the 3-iron FELT STUPENDOUS that day. Looks like the swing changes I made are a keeper. - eiji wrote:
moral of story, play whatever equipment you like best, don't matter if its miuras or some old school Hogan apex. everyone's expectations and benchmark of what is good for them is different.
I absolutely agree. It's our game, it's our wallet, and it's our choice. It's a pity that Miuras are so expensive, or else more would be able to afford and enjoy them. But, that's what capitalism is about. Supply feeding demand, with a price point set between these two forces. Just like it's a pity Porsches and Ferraris are so expensive. My old Toyota also gets me from point A to point B, costs less to run. But then, to the owners, Porsches and Ferraris are about much more than getting from point A to point B. - eiji wrote:
some care more about looking good, feeling good, having the newest greatest equipment, whilst others just care what's the final score they write down in their score cards, whether its with some dinged up old irons, some swanky new driver, some limited edition putter, or just a overturn umbrella.
Exactly. Perception determines how we feel about the equipment. I perceive my old german sedan to be a vehicle to transport me from A to B. And I thought that's what cars are, just a means of transportation. Until I drove a Ferrari for the first time... gingerly navigated to an open highway... and stepped on the pedal. OH MY GOD..... WHAT A SENSATION.... The throaty roar of the exhaust, like God gargling while humming a Tom Jones tune. The meaty shove in my backside as the pistons spun up. The rifle-bolt action of the manual gear, click-click into the gear slot. The overwhelming seemingly-endless wave after wave of torque as you match the gear to the rpm. I remember vividly the thought in my head afterwards - if there is a heaven, then this is what being in heaven must feel like. My senses were completely lit up - I have never felt more alive. I reluctantly handed the keys back to its generous rightful owner after the test-drive. It's almost cruel to give me a taste of the exquisite, only to have it end much too soon. I can't afford one, but I keep telling myself, perhaps someday... Meanwhile, my old beemer gets me from A to B just fine. And the Miuras? Each time I find the sweet spot, it also makes my senses light up, just for a brief moment. And I have to pause and admire the ball as it sails across the sky. And it's a lot cheaper than a Ferrari.

Yup we were playing blue..... correct, hole 15 with bunkers on both sides.... I normally play a 4 hybrid swing easy approach close and try chipping instead rather than incur the wrath of bunkers.. and typically end up with bogeys and the occasional par..

Accurate approach shots from 100-120m (Fact) , may not be a GIR approach shot but its still accurate. Gross score 92 (He typically averages 95-98 in MBGC). He blew a few holes on the par 4s and 5s but thats attributed to his fairway wood slicing out to water or flower bed as he can only drive around 190-200m , his second shot for the long par 5s or par 4s in MBGC will be typically off the woods. FYI, his previous irons were the Taylormade R7 Draw. | Eiji-san, that' an interesting theory on sound dictates the feel. I think Mizuno has that concept as well. Maybe I'm an exception since I tried plugging my earphone when swinging the club at the range and still feel it soft. that can't be only sound then or is my mind playing tricks on me ? Human body is sometimes a mystery...

Tomorrow night will be my first course experience with the Miura's. So I hope I can replicate your friends experience and score low 80's but I"m not holding may breath given I'm only been using the club on 3 range occasion. I'm happy to play the way I was with MP-68. I believe both the Indian and the Arrow needs to be correct, otherwise a compromises is required from either side. Good Indian might be able to shot well with bad arrow, but give him a good arrow then he will definitely be a better archer. At least that is what my basic logic dictates. No matter how good the indian is, if you gave him a worthless arrow then he will also be worthless archer. However todays' club standard is prety high, so worthless clubs should not exist (as long as it's not those funny fake club from somewhere). A for me, there are several reason why I get the blade. 1. I want more consistency for my swing and for that I need to develop accuracy. To train accuracy I need something smaller. The miura fits the bill. This is the main and probably only major reason I got it. The other two are supplementary. 2. I like the club, it's a beauty (so is the MP-68) 3. I got it off 2nd hand so it's "cheap" (remember cheap is relative ) So there you go 3 reason why I took the plunge.
