I second that only when you go up the tee.
From black tee most likely you need to clear 200m to get into the start of the fairway so you need driver, unless your wood is solid enough that you can get 220-230 on 3 woods then that's a different story.
Personally for me accuracy is something that I would prefer as a beginner. I rather drive 180 meter straight to where I want it to be (away from bunker, hazards, water) rather than drive 250 with unpredictable direction and distance.

Consistent 150 meter with 7 iron can also reach par 5 in 3 shot on most white tee in sgp.

If you can play off black tees, you should be driving long and straight. No doubts about it.

which means distance is important...only when one wants to be a good player.

I think being a good player means having the distance, in addition to accuracy. But I believe that between the 2 (distance / accuracy), one gets further ahead with accuracy than with distance.

Chrisd who started this thing didnt give enough info

- we know he's long, but was he accurate? or was his opponent more accurate?
- was his opponent an SB? If so, confirm (with distance adv. alone) you will loose
- was his opponent a croc? then strokes given not enough liao. Had nothing to do with distance

Distance to me is not as crucial as short game and putting. I will always remember the ah pek whose Tee shot is less that 180m. End of day, still 4-5 over. His putting, i think less than 25 putts and his short game is immaculate.

Does long drive = long 'hang ' time...meaning ball in the air longer than most?

wah piang ....si pek chiak lak liao....I kena 'fattten so much' that I am ready for thanksgiving....(DIEx10)....so heres the real scoop about my self-confessed game where its all about expectation setting:

I personally felt that my short game is within my expectation...considering the fact that I don or hardly practise and only do max of 2 games per month...on yearly basis, around 20-24 games. And like all things, one reaps what one sows....I am of the view that my short game is acceptable considering the amt of investment I made (pretty insignificant). Typically I have not much issue getting the ball on green...but getting close (defined as within 3m) depends alot of how much I remember the green contour/spped .... if there is caddy around, I should be ok...

PS: I am definitely not Ah Pek lah...though I hv to admit I dress like one.....AND pls....I am really a Seasoned Beginner....only ie WYSIWYG

I think identifying which is the weakest area of you game is more important... can try to split the strokes (72) into 3 categories...

Tee off (include any penalties eg. OB, water) - 18

Putting - 36

in between (anything after tee off and before reaching green) - 18

total - 72

Which do you spend the more shots? i believe it will be the in between....

Is it because the drive is too short that you have to use more than necessary to reach green? (Distance)

or just miss to left/right of green and need to chip in? (accuracy)

or maybe too many penalties?

To me it is easier to practice hitting all clubs than to try iand increase distance... Somehow for me when my drive is straight, it actually go further...

my take in this is that you need to cover the distance to actually arrive and be able to play below par if that is your goal in golf. Else you will be able to have a chance on birdie putt.

b)if you drive short and good in short game: seasoned beginner (85-90)

c)if you drive ok and good in short game: super seasoned beginners (80-85)

d)if you are long and and good in short game: star division (72-80)

e)if you are neither long off the tee nor can chip/pitch: real beginners (>105)

this is what i observe, not theory only. i bet most single hc players here are quite long.

If I can't be on d), I will rather be on a)
Distance is much depending on physical and difficult to improve especially when age catching up
Short game is much depending on practice which is possible to achieve great improvement.
BTW, I am on e) Embarassed
