Pirate booty plundered
BERLIN - A GERMAN treasure-hunter has netted around seven million euros (S$14.4 million) in booty from a pirate ship sunk off the coast of Borneo in 1806, the mass circulation Bild said on Wednesday.

Martin Wenzels, 42, is a property developer by day but moonlights as a part-time treasure-seeker and found '1.5 tonnes of silver coins, gold jewellery, cannons, crystal and porcelain' in the wreck of the pirate vessel Forbes, the newspaper said.

'The coins alone are worth up to 10 million dollars,' Bild added.

Wenzels said the find would help to offset the roughly three million euros he has sunk into diving for treasure over the past two years.

'At first, everything on the seabed looks encrusted and worthless.

'But holding the treasure in your hands is an indescribable adrenaline rush. You become a witness to past times,' Wenzel told the paper.

He said he had undertaken 35 dives, only two of which had resulted in a valuable haul.

Buoyed by the success of his recent find, he is already planning his next trip to hunt for more booty, Bild said. -- AFP
