- TOKYO (AP) — Japanese golfer Yuko Mitsuka has pulled out of 11 tournaments after being handed a record fine for slow play.
The Ladies Professional Golfer's Association of Japan fined the 25-year-old Mitsuka $21,500 on Tuesday after she quit midway through the first round of the World Ladies Championship last week in protest of a two-shot penalty she drew for slow play.
Mitsuka announced Wednesday she will withdraw from eight domestic tournaments and three overseas events.
"This will be a lesson to other golfers," JLPGA chief Hisako Higuchi said in Wednesday editions of the Nikkan Sports newspaper. "She has to take responsibility for her actions."

- Newbie Question: What is considered slow? You mean there's someone there to time you???
Not in social play, in tournament, the first player to hit has 45 seconds from the time he pulls his club, the others have 30 seconds.. The issue with beginners is they want to have 20 practice swings... (even tho the first one was fine)....

| For social game, I think slow play is.....when there is no one at the green and the flight is not even teeing off yet...... | |

| In PGA Tournament or LPGA Tournament (Professional Tournament), There are Timing Officials whose task is to time the golfers when the group is deem to be "out of position" (ie taking more than the alloted time to play). Ie it is near to the term "slow play" in our normal play. ("out of position" is not equal to slow play)
Any player in the group out of position who take more than 40 seconds to play a stroke will be first advised of the fact, if he/she exceed 40 seconds on one more occasion, he/she will incur a penalty of one strokes. (two strokes on next offence, disqualification the next offence).
The golfers concerned mentioned is fined not because of the slow play, but because she quit midway in her play. she incurred penalty of strokes because of slow play.

| slow play in social game means that if your flight is more than one clear hole (par 4 or par 5 hole, not par 3 hole) behind the group in front, then your flight is slow play (of course it is assume that you start playing immediately after your front group has moved out of range in first hole) | |

| Ideally, once the front group has moved out of range of the shot you are about to take, you should have finished your practice swings and be ready to take your shot.
If they have reached the green and you are just teeing off, and there is a group coming up behind you, then there is a need to speed up and keep pace with the front.
Most of us play too slow. We wait till the another person in our flight finishes his shot, then start thinking about our club selection and what shot we want to play. We should be ready to take our shot by then. It's easy, if we are driving the buggy, just drop off our buggy mate to take his shot, drive over to our own ball to take our shot, and our buggy mate just walks back while we are taking our shot, or we drive over to meet him halfway. Simple.
Where play really slows down is on the green. While another person is putting, we should have already gathered the information necessary for the putt (speed, break, uphill or downhill). While the first person to putt in the group is gathering his information, we can do the same. And so on with each person in the group until it is our turn to putt. Meaning that the last person to putt would have gathered the most information by his turn, not even needing to walk around for any reading of the green. In fact, when another person is taking his address position to putt and we shouldn't be moving, we can still assess the break of our putt by just using our marker without the ball in place.
These are just some of the simple time saving tips we should all practice, especially for beginners who tend to take more shots than most to complete a round. It also

| Sometimes the problem of slow play does not lie with you but with the flight in front of you. Singaporeans are somehow less patient..cannot wait. Guess it has to do with our work lifestyle. Stress.. so on the course also don't know how to enjoy nature. must finish in double quick time.. ha..ha....
Its important for us to be mindful not to take too long in our game. Slow play will actually affect the other players' game too.
Having said that..we must also be mindful that we were once beginners too and usually its the beginners that take a bit more time to clear a hole...or the bet is really very heavy so even the seasoned players will take more time assessing the green before putting.

| Hi, I'm just curious about this slow play thing. Once, i was playing a 4 ball game and the flight infront also had 4 ball, and the flight behind had 3.
So we were held up by the flight infront quite a bit. The flight behind, having only 3 people, was right up our asses. On 3 occasions, they teed off when my friends were taking their shot, and some landed pretty close and rolled even closer. They did not once short 'fore' to warn us of their shot.
I'm just curious, what can be done in such situations? Can i pick up their ball and put into my pocket? They were not even apologetic when we arrived back in the clubhouse.

| NO dude.......when you finished your putts. Wait for them to 'on' the green and come to the green. Then give them a blast. Simply no etiquette! If on fairway, just kick their ball to the rough. I know, I sound bad but really pissed the hell out of me if the clown behind consistently does this for several f/w. | |

| If u are in a members' club, u should complain to the committee or marshal. Most clubs take a serious view on dangerous play. | |

| That is, if the marshall is around. Else, gotta take matters in own hands. hmph. From past experiences, such golfers would not come up to green if you deliberately wait for them. Then next hole onwards, peace. My own personal experience. | |

| i usually start swearing at them and have come close to a fight once when the group behind challenged us and refused to apologise despite hitting it into our flight a number of times...if they don't apologise (which is rare given that this is a serious breach of etiquette and our golfers despite being slow are not animals) i would simply pocket their ball....openly!!!! | |

| if the flight behind do not apologize. report to the club after the game and let the disciplinary commitee handle it. if in a public club, look for a marshal and report it asap. there are many things that you can do privately and that of course is up to you try not to let the incident affect your game....have fun | |

| Suggestions (only...really only only)
#1 Take photo of them and post on websites!!!!
#2 Tell them to join your flight....so flight of 7 can bet skin and win more
#3 let them thru....and practise the 'do unto others what others do onto you '
