Refrence to today's Straits Times Forum on above topic, looks like golfers are being targetted for other sports' problems!

It's understandable that this guy propose such measures.

His old kampung house was relocated as it was converted to a golf course. After finding a fantastic working place that was within walking distance, it was also relocated to another end of the island as it was converted to a driving range. Now he has to make 1.5 hrs trip bus-mrt-(change line)mrt-bus daily. Tried to pickup the game and got a bad coach who were busy with other things and only spend 10 mins of the hour with him. Bought an expensive golf clubs online only to find out it's a knock off that was worth 10% of the price paid. Weekend rates are exorbitant so only play on weekday, but everytime apply leave to play, it rains. So in the end gave up golf and have intense animosity toward the game.

So people pls try to understand why this guy wants all golf courses in Singapore to become soccer fields.

Hi I feel quite strongly regarding this topic...

To me Such Statement are abit extreme and myopic
It is like staying the whole world should not eat any meat ( beef, Lamb or chicken ) so that no one will go hungry.. The feed used to feed these live stocks for food can be used to feed other humans

Or in more similiar aspect all buildings should be more than 10 storeys so that the housing supply will increase and the prices will not be so high.

Anyway, to me things are more complex and there are many other factors influencing any single issues. We should just expand our ideas and thoughts and find solutions instead of getting rid of one or finger pointing. The world is not a zero sum game..

If land and as a result sports facility avaliability is really such an issue for sports development, I have the following suggestions

1. Open ALL schools sports facilities for the Public. It is quite fustrating to see schools with good facilities locked up during weekends just because of "reasons" like worried of vanadalism, damage of property etc..

2. Open up sports facilities belonging to Govt linked organisations or companies to the public.

3. Identify dual usage of large plots of land like changi exhibition area which is used onli once every 2 yrs for aerospace.. And the up coming Changi Motor sports center I suspect might be the same

4. Maintain the current facilities better so that the usage can be higher and hence more participations

Anyway that is just my thoughts... In a nut shell, we need more sports facilities and also many more other stuffs to improve our qlty of life, however lets be creative and look at wat we have and how we can make the best use of it rather than finger point with statistics to prove the point.

WE CAN HAVE GOLF COURSES & OTHER SPORTS FACILITIES IF WE THINK HARD ENUF

Sorry for the long msg but just want to air my thoughts Smile

Are the current facilities fully utilized during weekdays? The swimming pool At Buona Vista on weekdays (morning till late evening) only have 2-3 person swimming. Thats 2-3 person ulitilizing the whole pool for 5 days a week!!!!!!!

On weekends everywhere is packed, even shopping centers and Sentosa, so should we build more shopping center and another Sentosa.

Infact they should build more driving range. It will be 1000% more utilized than any other sport facilities.

If they want success, just do what they do in Table Tennis and other 'professionals', buy overseas talent.

HOWEVER IF they were to free up the travel into JB, we will gladly give up some courses. JB courses are under utilized....so whos fault was it?

Then, some are empty also... really baseless here...

Actually this topic is already blown out of proportion. It started with a parent whose kids play rugby (or baseball) at Turf City (not the guy who recommended converting golf courses). The parent heard that Turf City area was going to be closed down or redeveloped for commercial use, so he wrote to the Forum, that if the Govt were serious in becoming a sporting nation, land needs to be provided to kids to play sports.

Just address the Turf City issue, no need to over generalize and even talk about extreme measures. Maybe this guy is particularly irked about the Green Fairways 9-hole course which is next to Turf City? Suspect

was at Turf city range a few times during weekends, almost all the kids playing soccer are Ang Mo. If these kids grow up to be good soccer players, will they represent singapore?

maybe only one portion of turf city are used by the ang mo kids, the other portion used by locals.

on a side note, turf city is really run down, a redevelopment is a good idea, maybe with bigger and better driving range, proper soccer fields with proper shelters and washroom facilities etc

Honestly, i just think that the Singapore Sports Council is looking for a quick fix. Hence the importing of foreign talents etc etc.

I just think that the SSC wants results from the various sports organisations, more than creating awareness. They rather see how many ppe representing Singapore, than how many people actually being interested in the sport. Before sowing seeds, they already want to see harvest.

dunlookback, i like your suggestions. in fact some have been suggested long ago. but no action.. you know why lah..

i think schools should not have football pitches. they should have the pitches at SSC facilities where they will take care of it and charge for its use and run it like tennis courts or badminton courts kind of system. but oh well..
