Trigger finger

Lately, I've been waking up in the morning with very stiff finger joints that also feel swollen if I've practiced or played golf the day before. After a little research, it seems like this symptom is trigger finger (and fortunately there's treatment available for this).

However I couldn't find much more information on this in relation to the equipment used, except one website which suggested changing to larger and softer grips. I have larger than average hands and I'm using Nike's stock grips on their VR irons which do feel a little small. Could this be the problem? Or is the shaft an issue (my current irons are steel shafted, I learnt golf with graphite and used graphite shafts up till my current set)?

Has anyone else had the same problem before? Does changing the grips help?

I used to have the same problem with my right hand index and middle finger.

But i am much better after every game when i relax my grip.
Am also using Nike stock grips on PX5.5 steel shaft but did not attempt to change grips so i can't comment whether it helps.

Think your issue here is grip size since you say you have larger than average hands. You can test if your grip is the right size for your hands. Take your grip, release your right hand and then check to see if the tips of your middle and ring finger of your left hand just touches the fleshy pad below your thumb, that would be just about the right size. If the tips of those two fingers push into your fleshy pad, the grip is too small, making you grip too tightly without you realizing it. Gripping lightly with too small a grip won't solve the problem I'm afraid, since you will tighten your grip on the downswing due to centrifugal force without you realizing it. Get your grips checked for size and if need be, change them. You should be playing better golf and losing your trigger finger.

The type of shaft has nothing to do with your malady, so no worries about that.

You can try Eric of Big Fish Golf in bukit merah. He is very knowledgeable and will be able to advise you well since he fits playing pros as well as tons of aspiring ones as well. You should be able to meet some other folks from this forum there as well.

There are also alternatives at Far East Shopping Centre if you know what you are doing, if not, I advise seeing a proper clubfitter for peace of mind that you are properly fit.

Hmmm... Change grip, lots of places u can do that.
I live in southwest and goes to the nearest shop at hub21.
Also up to individual preferences. Cost, location of shop and quality of work.

Agree with you bro that there are many places to change grip, but if not too sure about own grip size, best to go see a proper clubfitter. Getting grip changed is like changing tyres, seems simple, but can be a complicated thing too if you really get down to the nitty gritty. Rubber with reminder, full cord, half cord, shock absorbing, normal or constant taper....

Just like tyres are your only connection with the road, the grips are your only connection with the club. But both have profound influence on performance.

I had this problem too... got slightly better when I was forced to change my grip. (had a very very strong grip then.) .. now its slightly more neutral. But every once in a while, i go back to strong.

What can I say.. Old habits die hard right?...

Just checking here. If this issue of stiffness plus a bit of pain happened every day only in the morning when you wake up and sort of go away as the day passed by. If that appears to be the case, sometimes it is due to your body having uric acid, the prelude to gout. If that is true, go see your doctor and ask for uric acid test. Just another endless possibilities here.

My problem is the trigger finger of my left hand last finger.

Anyone having the same problem like me and any quick fix about it?

i use to have trigger finger pain, but it went away after i started training my grip with hand grippers.

Just checked and my iron grips are indeed too small.

But tituman now that you've mentioned that it could be caused by uric acid I'm a little concerned as my father suffers from gaut and I'm thinking that I could have the same genes that make me susceptible to the same condition. Do you know if the uric acid buildup is caused by golf?

Nope, definitely not by golf. It is just calcium built up in the joints due to not drinking insufficient water daily. Best just to have a blood test to be sure that it is not the cause and take it out of the equation. Other wise, it could just be a myriads of causes.

I have the trigger finger on my left hand last finger just like you.

Until today, it is still there but to a lesser extent now. What I did to mitigate it is to change to midsized grips so that it fits my large hands better and resulting in me exerting less force on my grip.

The only time did my trigger finger go away was when I went to Everest for a month and did not play golf at all. the trigger finger went away completely! however, it came back two weeks after I started golf again and I am resigned to living with it for the rest of my golfing life.
